At Simon Fraser University's School of Medicine (SoM), we envision a medical education system where students and residents learn as part of a team in primary care and other community-level settings, in person-centred environments, and with a curriculum that considers social, environmental and prevention contexts. As we establish the school in Surrey, B.C., our growing relationships with the local community, Divisions of Family Practice, Fraser Health Authority, First Nations Health Authority, physicians and Indigenous partners will help us to meet the diverse health needs of the communities we serve and improve access to primary care throughout the province. About the Role
The School of Medicine at Simon Fraser University invites applications for an Associate Dean, Learners. The Associate Dean appointment will be for a 3-year term, renewable, with an underlying faculty position. The underlying faculty position will be made at the appropriate rank and category, commensurate with experience. To be eligible to hold the underlying faculty position, candidates are expected to be able to contribute to teaching, service, and scholarship related to medical education and/or medical research. Alternative appointment arrangements (such as half-time) may also be considered to facilitate other commitments candidates may have.
The salary for the successful applicant will depend on the rank, category of appointment, and experience of the candidate, however, a reasonable estimate of the salary range is $220,000 - $270,000 (inclusive of an administrative stipend for the Associate Dean role and prorated depending on other commitments outside of academic work).
The Associate Dean, Learners is key in providing strategic leadership and support in building a culture and community that enriches learners’ experience and engagement within the education programs of the SFU SoM.
Responsibilities:
The key objective for the Associate Dean, Learners is to support structures, collaborations and resources that promote student and resident services and wellbeing as well as initiatives that embrace student and resident equity, diversity and inclusion. The Associate Dean, Learners will report to the Dean in the SoM, and is a member of the SoM Executive.
The portfolio for the SFU SoM Associate Dean, Learners includes but is not limited to the following responsibilities:
Provide leadership in advancing the SoM’s strategic plan and goals
Lead strategic planning of learner affairs activities, initiatives and support services and ensure alignment with institutional and the SoM policies and procedures
Work in close collaboration with related SFU Student Services to ensure the most efficient use of resources and avoid duplication of services
Lead strategic planning of MD Program admissions processes and policies
Provide oversight and support of the CaRMS matching process and admission to residency programs
Manage learner affairs and resources equitably, transparently and effectively, overseeing a process for regular identification and resolution of key risks in relation to student affairs
Collaborate with associate and assistant deans to ensure a cohesive, integrated approach that meets or exceeds accreditation standards related to learner affairs
Develop, implement and ensure compliance with policies, procedures, referral and specific action related to accommodation requirements of learners, in collaboration with the senior leadership team and liaising with university-wide programs and external bodies.
Participate on the Dean’s Executive Committee.
Undertake duties as may from time to time be assigned to them by the Dean
Work collegially and in partnership with faculty, other academic administrators, staff and the SFU SoM community/partners.
Serve as Acting Dean on notification from the Dean of short-term absences
Represent the SoM at external meetings and conferences
Serve on pan-university meetings of Associate Deans.
Qualifications & Experience:
Required:
M.D. (Doctor of Medicine) or graduate degree and 5 years’ experience in a student services leadership role
Minimum of 5 years of medical education experience working directly with learners
Experience with medical education leadership
Knowledge and understanding of and respect for Indigenous cultural identities and values
Demonstrated experience in positively engaging with diverse students, faculty and staff
Demonstrated commitment to administrative, organizational and collaborative leadership, and adept at building and maintaining constructive relationships with various university groups and external partners.
Familiarity with accreditation standards and guidelines for undergraduate and postgraduate medical education
Additional assets:
Eligibility to hold a license to practice medicine in British Columbia
Holds CCFP/FCFP designation

To be eligible to hold the underlying faculty position, candidates are expected to be able to contribute to teaching, service, and scholarship related to medical education and/or medical research. The salary for the successful applicant will depend on the rank, category of appointment, and experience of the candidate, however, a reasonable estimate of the salary range is $185,000 - $270,000 (inclusive of an administrative stipend for the Assistant Dean role and prorated depending on other commitments outside of academic work).
The Assistant Dean, PGME will be responsible for oversight of SFU SoM’s Postgraduate Medical Education programs, including supporting the overall leadership of each PGME program. The Assistant Dean will oversee the PGME accreditation and continuous quality improvement processes, including internal reviews and preparing and supporting programs for external reviews in collaboration with the Associate Dean, Assessment, Evaluation and Accreditation. This position reports to the Associate Dean, Medical Education Programs (AD MEP).
Key Areas of Involvement
The Assistant Dean, PGME is responsible for overseeing the SFU Doctor of Medicine (PGME) programs including supporting the development, delivery, evaluation and overall leadership of each program, and developing, interpreting and implementing policies pertaining to postgraduate medical education within the SFU SoM. In fulfilling this mandate, the Assistant Dean, PGME works in close collaboration with the Associate Dean Accreditation, Assessment and Evaluation (ADAAE), the Associate Dean, Medical Education Programs, program directors and other members of the Senior Leadership Team of the School of Medicine. The specific areas of involvement include, but are not limited to:
Providing leadership in the development and implementation of the SFU SoM goals in postgraduate medical education
Oversee and provide support for the development, delivery and monitoring of PGME programs
Serve as the main point of contact for PGME programs with the College of Family Physicians Canada and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada
In collaboration with AD AAE, oversee and provide support for the implementation and monitoring of the programs of assessment within PGME programs
In collaboration with the AD AAE and program directors, monitor the processes and outcomes of the PGME programs
In collaboration with the AD AAE and other senior leaders, ensure continued compliance with CACMS accreditation standards
In collaboration with the AD MEP, develop, interpret and/or implement policies related to PGME programs
In collaboration with the Associate Dean Indigenous Health (ADIH) and other members of the Senior Leadership Team, contribute to SFU SoM’s commitment to TRC Calls to Action #23 and 24
In collaboration with the ADIH, create opportunities to integrate Indigenous ways of knowing into PGME structures such as curriculum, assessment, policies and processes
In collaboration with the Assistant Dean Learner Affairs, support residents requiring additional learning resources
In collaboration with the Associate Dean Research (ADR), support and encourage research in medical education.
Assist and advise faculty members (who are direct reports) in the Office of Postgraduate Medical Education regarding the performance of their duties and their career development
Work closely with other members of the senior leadership team to develop SoM policy, planning and operations
Work closely with other members of the senior leadership team to support the space, staffing and funding needs of the PGME programs
Represent the SoM with regard to postgraduate studies by being a member of relevant bodies within SFU
Work with deans for postgraduate education at other Canadian Universities to support innovation and to address problems of mutual interest and concern.
Undertake duties as may from time to time be assigned to them by the AD MEP.
Act as AD MEP on notification from the AD MEP of short-term absences
Qualifications & Experience:
Required
M.D. (Doctor of Medicine) is required.
Minimum of 5 years of direct teaching experience with medical learners
Knowledge of and respect for Indigenous cultural identities and values
Experience with the development, management, and/or monitoring of medical education curriculum and/or programs
Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with diverse groups and teams
Familiarity with residency programs, the medical education environment, and health care environments (with a preference for primary care environments).
Additional Assets
Preference will be given to family physicians and generalist specialists

The Assistant Dean, UGME is responsible for overseeing the SFU Doctor of Medicine (UGME) program including developing, delivering and monitoring of curriculum, and developing, interpreting and implementing policies pertaining to undergraduate medical education within the SFU SoM. In fulfilling this mandate, the Assistant Dean, UGME works in close collaboration with the Associate Dean Accreditation, Assessment and Evaluation, the Assistant Dean, UGME and other members of the Senior Leadership Team of the School of Medicine. The ADR for SFU SoM provides leadership in advancing the research mission and growing our reputation in medical and health research. The ADR fosters a culture of inquiry amongst learners, and of collaboration and excellence with researchers within and outside of the School of Medicine. The ADR reports to the Dean, SFU SoM, and is a member of the senior executive team.
Key Areas of Involvement:
The key objective for the ADR is the development and implementation of the SFU SoM research strategic plan that will build upon the pillars of the SFU SoM’s Vision. The establishment of effective research collaborations within the SoM, across SFU, with key community partners, and with medical researchers around the world will be critical to the success of the strategic plan.
The portfolio for the SFU SoM ADR shall include responsibility for:
- Leadership: develop and implement a strategic plan that aligns with both the vision and mission of the SoM as well as the broader mission of the university.
- Research supports: drawing on resources from across SFU, develop and support the research infrastructure needed to foster research collaborations, prepare and administer research grants and contracts, ensure adherence to the highest standards of research ethics and integrity, and support knowledge mobilization activities.
- Research results: progressively increase o applications and success rates for externally-funded granting competitions and proposals for research contracts; and
- the scholarly dissemination/knowledge mobilization of the products of research.
- Develop and support the undergraduate (Doctor of Medicine) student group research projects program and develop mechanisms to support student participation in research outside of the mandatory group program.
- Involve researchers from across the SFU community in co-creating and supporting SoM led and supported research initiatives.
- Liaise with community partners to identify research needs, and involve members of the community (including patient partners) in research projects.
Other Responsibilities of the Role of the ADR:
- Participate on the Dean’s Executive Committee.
- Undertake duties as may from time to time be assigned to them by the Dean.
- Work collegially and in partnership with faculty, other academic administrators, staff and the SFU SoM community/stakeholders.
- Serve as Acting Dean on notification from the Dean of short-term absences
- Represent the SoM at external meetings and conferences related to research
- Serve on pan-university meetings of ADR and the activities undertaken by this group (e.g., internal grant review committees, award nominations and reviews, etc.).
Qualifications & Experience:
- Ph.D. required
- M.D. preferred. A Master’s degree plus graduate degree with an active research portfolio may also be considered
- Active research agenda and a strong record of scholarly publications required
- Experience in research administration and securing competitive grants or contracts in support of research is preferred
- Excellent knowledge and understanding of and respect for Indigenous cultural identities and values are preferred
- Experience in and/or knowledge of Primary Care is preferred
- Eligibility to hold a license to practice medicine in British Columbia desired
- An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.
