At Simon Fraser University's School of Medicine (SoM), we envision a medical education system where students and residents learn as part of a team in primary care and other community-level settings and with a curriculum that considers social, environmental and prevention contexts. As we establish the school in Surrey, B.C., our growing relationships with the local community and with our partners (the Fraser Health Authority, the First Nations Health Authority, and the Divisions of Family Practice) will help us to meet the diverse health n eeds of the communities we serve and improve acccess to primary care throughout the province. We seek to advance Truth and Reconciliation by embedding and equalizing Indigenous knowledge systems in our learning, research and practices while resting on a solid foundation of high-quality, accredited education and world-class research efforts that keep us oriented towards measurable socially accountable outcomes.
About the Role
The School of Medicine at Simon Fraser University invites applications for Acute Care Lead-Langley Hospital. The appointment will be for a 3-year term, renewable, with an underlying clinical faculty position. The underlying clinical faculty position will be made at the appropriate rank in accordance with Policy A10.07- Clinical Faculty Appointments in the School of Medicine. To be eligible to hold the underlying clinical faculty position, candidates are expected to be able to contribute skills-based instruction and case-based learning, service to the University and/or to the profession, and/or scholarly activity related to medical education and/or medical research. This is a part-time appointment equivalent to roughly 0.1 FTE to facilitate other commitments candidates may have.
The salary for the successful applicant will depend on the rank and experience of the candidate, however, a reasonable estimate of the salary range is $27,790 – 30,290, prorated depending on other commitments (e.g. clinical practice hours) outside of academic work.
This position reports to the Associate Dean, Education.
Key Areas of Involvement
The specific areas of involvement include, but are not limited to:
- In collaboration with *SFU SoM, facility and Fraser Health leadership, and other relevant parties:
- Engage facility-based physicians and other health professionals at Langley Hospital to encourage them to become clinical faculty members of SFU SoM, including serving as preceptors for medical students and residents
- Identify inpatient and outpatient clinical learning opportunities at Langley Hospital that meet the objectives and learning outcomes of the SFU SoM UGME and residency programs, including opportunities for interprofessional learning
- Determine capacity for teaching at Langley Hospital; works with local leadership to increase teaching capacity where possible for high priority areas
- Coordinate learner placements at the site, ensuring placements do not exceed teaching capacity
- Foster collaborative relationships with other hospital leads at respective clinical learning sites to ensure consistency in learner experience
- Provide status reports to SFU SoM and hospital leadership on learner educational activities and outcomes
- Ensure processes to support learner orientation, safety and wellness are in place and adhered to
- Contribute to long term planning of medical education capacity at clinical site, in collaboration with site leadership and other institutions
- Promote and cultivate culturally safe and inclusive learning environments
- Support initiatives that advance Indigenous cultural safety and anti-racism in medical education
- Identify challenges or barriers to a high-quality learner experience and develop remedial strategies in collaboration with local leadership
- Work with Faculty Education and Support Lead to:
- Identify education and support needs of facility-based clinical faculty preceptors
- Support faculty education initiatives for facility-based faculty
- Act as the point-person for SFU learners at Langley Hospital, addressing site-specific education needs for students, residents, and visiting learners

About the Role
The School of Medicine at Simon Fraser University invites applications for Electives Lead (UGME). The appointment will be for a 3-year term, renewable, with an underlying clinical faculty position. The underlying clinical faculty position will be made at the appropriate rank in accordance with Policy A10.07- Clinical Faculty Appointments in the School of Medicine. To be eligible to hold the underlying clinical faculty position, candidates are expected to be able to contribute skills-based instruction and case-based learning, service to the University and/or to the profession, and/or scholarly activity related to medical education and/or medical research. This is a part-time appointment equivalent to roughly 0.4 FTE to facilitate other commitments candidates may have.
The salary for the successful applicant will depend on the rank and experience of the candidate, however, a reasonable estimate of the salary range is $111,160 – 121,160, prorated depending on other commitments (e.g. clinical practice hours) outside of academic work.
This position reports to the Associate Dean, Undergraduate Medical Education (UGME).
Key Areas of Involvement
The Electives Lead provides academic leadership, oversight, and coordination for the elective program in the SFU MD Program. This role ensures that all elective experiences (clinical, research, and scholarly) meet the academic, professional, and accreditation standards of the School of Medicine. Grounded in SFU’s values of social accountability, equity, community engagement, and culturally safe care, the Elective Lead supports a high-quality, equitable learning experience for all students. The role involves close collaboration with the Learners Affairs Office, the Assessment & Learner Progress Unit, Clinical Site Directors (including Rural), Educational Leads, including Community Engaged Learning Lead, Scholarly Project Lead, MEDS 420 and 430 Course Leads, faculty supervisors, and administrative staff to ensure that elective opportunities reflect the School’s educational goals and competency-based framework.
This role will liaise with other AFMC Schools of Medicine Electives or international schools of medicine leads for matters relating to SFU MD Program student electives in their home school. Will represent the SFU SOM on the AFMC Electives Network and any related committees or processes related to matters of national medical student electives.
For medical student electives in British Columbia, will work with the Electives Lead for UGME in UBC and any provincial administrative or leader.
The specific areas of involvement include, but are not limited to:
Academic Leadership
Provide academic direction and oversight for the MD Program Elective program, ensuring alignment with SFU’s MD Program competencies and milestones. Ensure elective opportunities reflect SFU’s emphasis on community-engaged, socially accountable, and culturally safe medical education.
Approve and maintain elective offerings across clinical and non-clinical domains, confirming that they meet academic, supervision, and safety standards.
Lead ongoing quality improvement through student and faculty feedback, program evaluation, and data review.
Ensure elective learning experiences integrate coherently with other components of the MD curriculum.
Oversee with a UGME staff support, the implementation, proceesses for review/approval/decline/scheduling/orientation of medical student visiting electives in a SFU SoM affiliated learning site.
Student Guidance and Experience
Collaborate with Learner Affairs to integrate and frame electives planning and selection within the broader career development and advising system.
Provide advice and guidance on the elective selection and sequencing to support students’ learning objectives, professional development, and career planning.
Communicate with each SFU MD Program class annually on Elective learning.
Oversee the elective matching and scheduling process to ensure fairness, transparency, and equitable access for all SFU MD Program students.
Support student request for sudden change in elective choice due to unforeseen personal issues or change in career path.
Review and approve requests by SFU MD Program student for out-of-region, out-of-province, and international electives, confirming appropriate supervision, learning objectives, and compliance with SFU and MD Program policies.
Monitor student progress, address academic or professionalism concerns during elective placements, and ebsure appropriate referrals and supports are in place.
Provide informal referrals to student support and wellbeing resources such as financial aid, awards, and other relevant services, as appropriate.
Faculty and Site Engagement
Collaborate with Clinical Site Directors (including Rural), other Educational Leads, and community partners to ensure consistent quality and supervision across electives. Support faculty supervisors in understanding and fulfilling expectations for elective student teaching, assessment, and feedback in collaboration with Faculty site leads.
Work with Clinical Site Directors, community and hospital-based sites to identify and develop new elective opportunities that align with SFU’s mission and regional needs.
Ensure that all elective placements comply with SFU SOM policies regarding safety, professionalism, education and student well-being.
Assessment and Evaluation
Collaborates with the Associate Dean Assessment and the Director of Assessment to identify the assessment methods to be used in each elective and to develop the Assessment Packages for each elective to ensure alignment with the Program of Assessment.
Collaborates with the Assessment Unit to develop any new assessment instruments to be used in the electives.
Collaborates with the Assessment Unit and the MEDS 430 /420 Course Leads to outline the schedule for the timely completion of assessments within each elective to support the timeline review and assignment of grades in each elective.
Oversee the implementation, and continual improvement of the assessment framework for electives to align with the principles outlined in the Program of Assessment.
Collaborates with Office of Faculty Engagement and Support to provide faculty development focused on the timely and appropriate use of workplace-based assessments.
Works with the Associate Director Evaluation to review evaluation reports for all electives and identify opportunities for improvement.
Works with the MEDS 430 lead to review performance of each elective and develop CQI plans to improve or address any concerns with electives.
Prepare an annual report for the MD Program and students on Electives in the SOM
Policy, Governance, and Quality Assurance
Ensure the Elective program and all student requests for or options of elective learning complies with SFU School of Medicine policies and national standards (e.g., CACMS, AFMC guidelines).
Participate in governance structures including Undergraduate Program (Committee (UPC) and the various relevant subcommittees, (UPC Curricular subcommittee.
Contribute to the development, revision and implementation of existing and new policies related to elective placements, travel, safety, and equity.
Oversee the creation and periodic review of the Electives Handbook, guidelines, and evaluation tools.
Administration and Communication
Work with administrative staff to manage elective logistics, including match processes, scheduling, and change/add/drop requests.
Ensure and contribute to timely and clear communication with students, supervisors, and program staff regarding expectations, timelines, and procedures.
Prepare reports on elective participation, site capacity, and student distribution for review by program leadership.
Coordinate with other institutions for external elective arrangements and agreements.
Oversee with UGME staff, the Visiting Electives program (once launched at a future date)
Qualifications & Experience:
Required
Eligibility for appointment as Clinical Faculty in accordance with Policy A10.07- Clinical Faculty Appointments in the School of Medicine
M.D. (Doctor of Medicine) required, preferably in Family Medicine or Primary Care.
Eligibility to hold a license to practice medicine in British Columbia.
Demonstrated experience in undergraduate medical education, including teaching, supervision, or curriculum development.
Strong understanding of competency-based medical education principles and assessment practices.
Proven ability to provide academic leadership and work collaboratively within a distributed and interdisciplinary educational environment.

Key Areas of Involvement
The Knowledge Assessments Lead is responsible for the ongoing development, blueprinting, implementation, and continuous quality improvement of all Knowledge Assessments, including the Progress Test, Weekly Knowledge Checks, and Monthly Mastery Assessments. The role ensures that assessments are valid, reliable, fair, and aligned with Competency-Based Medical Education (CBME) principles and program objectives.
The specific areas of involvement include, but are not limited to:
Provide pedagogical leadership in the design, development, and continuous enhancement of Knowledge Assessments to support learner progression and program outcomes.
Collaborate closely with the Assessment & Learner Progress Unit to ensure knowledge assessments align with UGME/PGME competencies, yearly milestones, and learning objectives.
Work with Course Directors and faculty members to facilitate question-writing workshops, blueprint assessment content, support peer review processes, and contribute to standard-setting activities.
Partner with the Learner Assessment team on scoring methodologies, item analysis, data interpretation, reporting, and strengthening assessment quality.
Support quality assurance processes through content review, ensuring content validity, curricular alignment, clarity, and appropriate levels of cognitive demand.
Ensure compliance with accreditation standards, institutional policies, and best practices in medical education assessment.
Provide recommendations for targeted skills development, remediation planning, and feedback based on assessment results.
Collaborate with the Assessment & Learner Progress Unit to lead innovation in assessment design, integrating evidence-based approaches, emerging methodologies, and new digital assessment tools as appropriate.
Collaborate with the Assessment Specialists to support faculty development activities to build assessment literacy, including best practices for item writing, interpreting item analysis, and delivering effective feedback.
Partner with the Learner Assessment Team to guide the development and maintenance of item banks, ensuring currency, quality, and regular review of assessment items.
Contribute to the development and refinement of assessment-related policies, including exam conduct, security, remediation, and accommodations.
Supports the strategic plans and priorities of the Assessment & Learner Progress Unit and the School of Medicine
Participate as a member of the UGME Assessment Subcommittee and other working groups as required.
Engage in Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) initiatives to refine and strengthen the Knowledge Assessment program.
Qualifications & Experience
Required

The role ensures that all Structured Assessments remain valid, reliable, fair, and aligned with the principles of Competency-Based Medical Education.
The specific areas of involvement include, but are not limited to:
Provide pedagogical leadership for the design, development, and enhancement of Structured Assessments.
Work closely with the Assessment & Learner Unit to ensure Structured Assessments are high quality and aligned with UGME/PGME program objectives, competencies, yearly milestones, and learning outcomes.
Collaborate with Course Directors and other faculty to facilitate case-writing workshops, blueprint assessment content, conduct peer reviews, and support standard-setting processes.
Support and assist with the recruitment, training, and development of examiners and standardized patients.
Collaborate with the Learner Assessment team on scoring, data analysis, standard-setting, and reporting activities.
Oversee quality assurance processes for Structured Assessments, including content reviews to ensure content validity and alignment with the curriculum.
Ensure compliance with accreditation standards, institutional policies, and assessment best practices.
Provide recommendations for learner remediation and feedback based on Structured Assessment results.
Support the strategic priorities of the Assessment & Learner Progress Unit and the School of Medicine.
Participate as a member of the UGME Assessment Subcommittee and other working groups as required.

This role ensures WBAs are valid, reliable, fair, and aligned with Competency-Based Medical Education (CBME) principles.
The specific areas of involvement include, but are not limited to:
Provide pedagogical guidance for the development, refinement, and continuous quality improvement of WBA instruments.
Collaborate closely with the Assessment & Learner Progress Unit to ensure WBAs are aligned with program objectives, competencies, yearly milestones, and learning outcomes.
Work with course directors and faculty to develop or enhance WBA instruments, deliver faculty development, and ensure completion compliance.
Partner with the Learner Assessment team to monitor completion rates, track compliance, analyze data, and generate assessment reports.
Ensure compliance with accreditation standards, institutional policies, and best practices in assessment.
Support the integration of WBA data into learner progress reviews and remediation planning.
Contribute to the strategic initiatives and priorities of the Assessment & Learner Progress Unit and the School of Medicine.
Serve as a member of the UGME Assessment Subcommittee and other relevant working groups.
Participate in program evaluation and continuous quality improvement (CQI) initiatives related to assessments.
Collaborate with the Assessment & Learner Progress Team to implement new WBA initiatives, ensuring smooth adoption across programs and alignment with CBME frameworks.
Provide expert advice on assessment standardization and benchmarking across disciplines and clinical settings.
Support faculty development in assessment literacy, including the use of instruments, entrustment decisions, providing feedback, and competency evaluation.
Qualifications & Experience
Required
Eligibility for appointment as Clinical Faculty in accordance with Policy A10.07- Clinical Faculty Appointments in the School of Medicine
MD and eligibility for medical licensure in British Columbia (preferred). Candidates with alternate credentials in health professions or a related field who are eligible for appointment as Clinical Faculty may be considered.
Minimum of 2 years of direct teaching experience with medical learners.
Demonstrated knowledge of and respect for Indigenous cultural identities, values, and ways of knowing, with a commitment to advancing equity, diversity, inclusion, and Indigeneity.

About the Role
The School of Medicine at Simon Fraser University invites applications for Small Group Learning Lead (UGME). The appointment will be for a 3-year term, renewable, with an underlying clinical faculty position. The underlying clinical faculty position will be made at the appropriate rank, commensurate with appointment policy A10.07 – Clinical Faculty Appointments. To be eligible to hold the underlying clinical faculty position, candidates may be expected to be able to contribute to skills-based instruction and case-based learning, service to the University and/or to the profession, and/or scholarly activity related to medical education and/or medical research. This is a part-time appointment (0.2 Full-Time Equivalent) to facilitate other commitments (e.g. clinical practice hours) that candidates may have.
The salary for the successful applicant will depend on the rank, category of appointment, and experience of the candidate. Role Overview
The Small Group Learning Lead is responsible for the design, implementation, and coordination of small group sessions across the MD Program, ensuring alignment with integrated themes, weekly clinical presentations, and program objectives. They are responsible for supporting faculty in creating student-centered, reflective, and inclusive learning environments, mentoring facilitators in effective group dynamics, and collaborating with content experts to integrate interdisciplinary and community-based perspectives. They are also responsible for overseeing continuous evaluation and quality improvement to ensure sessions promote active learning, psychological safety, and lifelong reflective practice.
The specific areas of involvement include, but are not limited to:
Curriculum Design & Facilitation
Lead the implementation and organization of small group learning sessions across all phases of the MD Program, ensuring alignment with weekly clinical presentations and integrated themes working closely with the BioBehavioural Sciences Lead, Course Lead, Modality Leads and UGME curriculum team.
Support the development of faculty facilitators in creating student centric small group learning sessions that allow vulnerability and foster reflective practice.
Oversee the alignment of small group sessions across the program, ensuring content, learning objectives, and assessment strategies are appropriately mapped.
Collaborate with content experts and faculty to enhance session design, operationalization, and integration of interdisciplinary perspectives.
Facilitate faculty engagement and development by providing guidance, resources, mentorship, and support for effective facilitation.
Work closely with the assessment and evaluation teams to integrate both assessment and evaluation strategies, monitor learning outcomes, and inform continuous improvement of sessions.
Apply ongoing QI initiatives to continually identify opportunities to improve the curriculum and learning experience incorporating student and faculty feedback.
Ensure smooth coordination of small group logistics and contribute to program-level planning and quality assurance initiatives.
Ensure discussions reflect interdisciplinary perspectives and incorporate Indigenous and community-based knowledges.
Instructional Leadership
Model and promote best practices in small group facilitation, emphasizing active learning, equitable participation, and psychological safety.
Mentor and coach faculty facilitators in observing group dynamics and intervening when participation is unbalanced or learning is limited.
Support facilitators in guiding students to take shared responsibility for their learning, encourage one another, and reflect on their progress.
Champion the development of reflective practice as a critical component of lifelong learning and resiliency through small group engagement.
Collaboration & Coordination
Work closely with Course Leads (MEDS 410, 420, 430) and other modality leads to ensure small group learning integrates effectively with large group, laboratory and kinesthetic, clinical skills, and community learning.
Collaborate with the Assessment Team to align small group outcomes with workplace-based assessments and yearly milestones.
Coordinate with Theme Leads and community partners to ensure small group sessions reflect diverse populations, community needs, and health systems perspectives.
Equity, Inclusion & Cultural Safety
Foster small group learning environments that are culturally safe, inclusive, and trauma-informed.
Collaborate with Indigenous Health and Equity Leads to embed equity-oriented, anti-oppressive, and culturally responsive approaches into small group learning.
Support facilitators in developing skills to manage sensitive discussions and address bias and power dynamics respectfully and constructively.
Evaluation & Quality Improvement
Collaborate with the Educational Quality Improvement Unit to develop questions relevant for the evaluation of the small group learning curriculum.
Review evaluation reports to identify areas for improvement and develop action plans to address ongoing quality improvement.
Contribute to the ongoing renewal of the small group curriculum and facilitator training resources.
Ensure small group learning remains responsive to evolving medical education standards, accreditation requirements, and learner needs.

In this role, you will foster partnerships, coordinate educational opportunities, and enhance the visibility and impact of rural health within the School of Medicine.
Key Responsibilities
Community Engagement
- Build and sustain strong partnerships with rural health organizations (e.g., RCCbc, REAP), healthcare providers, community leaders, and other interest holders (e.g. UBC Chair in Rural Health) to promote collaboration and mutual support.
- Create innovative strategies to strengthen connections between rural communities and SFU SoM.
Program Coordination
Design and coordinate rural clinical learning experiences for medical students and residents, ensuring alignment with educational goals and program standards.
Identify and confirm rural learning sites and liaise with preceptors to support placements.
Learner Support and Guidance
Collaborate with Learner Affairs to support students before, during, and after their rural placements.
Advocate for funding, housing, and logistical support for learners participating in rural experiences, in collaboration with partner organizations.
Clinical Faculty Support and Guidance
Partner with Faculty Education and Support to assist rural healthcare professionals in their teaching roles, address instructional challenges, and promote a positive learning environment.
Outreach and Promotion
Champion rural health within the School of Medicine and encourage students and residents to pursue rural healthcare careers.
Feedback and Continuous Improvement
Analyze feedback from students, faculty, and community partners to inform ongoing improvement of rural programs and initiatives.
Collaborate with external partners on rural health projects and initiatives as opportunities arise.
Qualifications & Experience
Required
Medical Degree (MD) and eligibility for medical licensure in British Columbia.
Extensive experience in rural healthcare - demonstrated understanding of the strengths, challenges, and unique contexts of rural and remote medical practice is essential.
Knowledge of health systems and policies affecting rural and Indigenous populations in BC.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build and maintain effective relationships with diverse partners, including healthcare providers, community organizations, and academic colleagues.
Commitment to advancing equity in rural, remote, and Indigenous healthcare across British Columbia, with a collaborative and culturally safe approach.
Ability and willingness to travel to rural communities and learning sites across the province as required.
