Vice-Provost and Associate Vice-President, Learning & Teaching


The Vice-Provost and Associate Vice-President, Learning and Teaching, advances and delivers on learning and teaching priorities set out in the Academic Plan. This includes:

  • leading institutional initiatives to increase student access to flexible, experiential and work-integrated learning,
  • fostering institutional culture and practices that value and celebrate teaching so that instructors are recognized for their work creating exceptional learning experiences,
  • providing academic units with guidance in implementing university procedures related to learning and teaching such as setting and assessing educational goals,
  • and aligning learning and teaching resources at SFU—such as teaching support units—to ensure they support instructors in ways that best respond to their needs and priorities.

The position is currently held by Kris Magnusson (pro tem).


The Vice-Provost, Learning & Teaching, provides leadership to the following teaching support units:

Centre for Educational Excellence (CEE)

Innovative teaching development for instructors and academic units.

Learning Experiences Assessment and Planning (LEAP)

Supporting continual improvement of the learning experience by gathering student feedback and helping to assess educational goals.

Transforming Inquiry into Learning and Teaching (TILT)

Transforming inquiry into teaching and learning at SFU by supporting faculty, instructors, staff and students to engage in the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL).

Office of Francophone and Francophile Affairs (OFFA/BAFF)

A leader in the growth and development of post-secondary education in French in British Columbia.
