Introduction

After graduating from the University of California Santa Barbara in 1997, I obtained experience in the museum sector working in the visitor services department at the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles. From there, I entered the HRM world as an environmental planner and archaeologist for the California Department of Transportation, performing all levels of environmental compliance for various road projects within four counties in southern California. I’ve also worked for a private archaeological consulting firm, primarily on a large electrical transmission project. My interest in preservation, public education, and land management led me to California State Parks, where I am currently the Supervisor, Cultural Resources Program at the Angeles District.

MA Research

Using a legacy collection resulting from a large-scale excavation for a development project in the 1980s, I plan to explore coastal and inland trade relationships at an important Fernandeño village site, Siutcanga in Encino, California. By analyzing the large number of tarring pebbles found at the site, I plan to examine the source locations for the asphaltum used for water-proofing basketry water bottles, as well as the types of bottles being manufactured at the site and the intensity of manufacture over time. This study will use archaeometric techniques, ethnohistoric research, and environmental archaeology to elucidate the role of Siutcanga in regional precontact political-economic systems and provide important context for descendant communities.

Other Activities

In addition to my roles at work and school, I am the board chair and acting director for the Chumash Indian Museum in Thousand Oaks, California (www.chumashmuseum.org). In whatever spare time I have remaining,  I enjoy cooking, gardening, and exploring the backroads with my husband in our Jeep Wrangler.
