Use Wear:
Ground Stones - Quartzite

Sheen and No Sheen Areas on Same Surface

Example 3

Figure 5. SN 0024 Ona Adi Wedimadqos A1:2:3 Post Aksumite (CE 800 – 2000) – areas of microscopic images indicated by circle and square

Wedimadqos SN 0024 (Figure 5), dating to the Post Aksumite period at Ona Adi, also shows different use-wear patterns in magnified images. Figure 6 (sample area circled in Figure 5) has a tribological sheen adhering to the surface. It also shows fractured crystal asperities, which is evident in the irregular and angular light reflections scattered over the surface. Smaller light reflections are coming from debris adhering to the surface and appear as small ‘dots’. From the second sampled area of the surface, Figure 7 below (sample area shown in square in Figure 7), there is no evidence of sheen, the surface is more leveled/smooth, and there is less reflection from individual crystal asperity fractures

Figure 6. SN 0024 Ona Adi Wedimadqos A1:2:3 Post Aksumite – surface area 1 (circled in Figure 5.85) (~40X) This area has a tribological sheen, appearing as a film over the surface
Figure 7. SN 0024 Ona Adi Wedimadqos A1:2:3 Post Aksumite – surface area 2 (squared in Figure 5.85) (~40X) This area has no evidence of sheen, the surface is leveled, and there are a small number of ‘dots’ of light reflecting off sheared crystals
