Week 7Extinction This week we are taking a second look at extinction rates. The lectures: 10_extinction_smallpops_1141.pdf 11_extinction_patterns_1141.pdf Workshop readings: Economist_exercise_1141.pdf . Example article: Economist_2003.html The paper it is based on: Doherty_etal_PNAS03.pdf . Print it out and mark it up like you are marking up your own. Comparing the two: Economist_Critical_reading_Qs.pdf . In the workshop, we will analyse the Economist article. Then you'll have 30 minutes or so to reread your paper, and then we'll give you a 2 minutes each to tell us all (a) what it is about [comprehension] (b) what aspects you think are interesting [implications and significance] and (c) what you need to explore further to get a deeper comprehension [leading to the critique of one aspect]. There is a second example: a 2010 paper on megaviruses By Curtis Suttle at UBC, and its Economist article. This is the better-written of the two editorials, but the main paper is a genomics study. You just need to read the editorial in the first instance. First draft is due March 5. | |||||
