Week 8Extinction Risk and Estimating Species Richness This week we finish talking about patterns of extinction (slides all together in lecture 11) and start in on Species Area Curves and how they are used to estimate extinction, well, with a detour on how we estimate species richness of an area. The website for testing a proportion that I use is here. The latest schedule is here. The lecture is 12_measuring_SR_1141.pdf The reading for the remainder of the month is Purvis_Hector_00.pdf. Workshop for next week: Writing a critique? two readings: Xu96.pdf suggests that we split the orangutans into two species based on mtDNA. Muir98.pdf critiques this conclusion. This is a good model for your paper. Read the Xu paper to get a sense for their dataset and conclusion, but focus on the Muir paper for Monday. Describe what each paragraph does. Bring a copy of the critique to mark up. Here are some notes for this exercise, an inventory to help guide you, and our grading rubric. | |||||
