Provincial Research Showcase - Five Days in May

Registration for Five Days in May is now open! 

Five Days in May is a provincial research showcase presented by the five regional health authorities and the First Nations Health Authority. Our goal is to educate, inform, inspire and stimulate provincial health care research awareness in an open and inclusive forum. Identified themes for this year’s event include Mental Health and Substance Use, Indigenous Health, Community Health, Rural Health, COVID-19 and Seniors Health.

Our virtual MCAT Week is coming up this month and we’re hoping to see you there!

They are looking for executive members, who will be helping with general administrative duties like room booking, event planning, and funds/facility management. Study Hall @ Home

Study Hall @ Home is a supportive virtual space hosted by Peer Educators who are available to provide students with study tips, academic support, and resources. Students can drop in for as long as they like, or stay the whole time. The Study Hall is open on Wednesday morning from 9-11am and Friday evenings from 6-8pm.

Student Learning Commons - Workshops

The Student Learning Commons offers a suite of workshops under the following categories; Learning, Writing, and English as an Additional Language (EAL). Workshops range from 60 to 90 minutes and provide valuable information in engaging formats. Each semester we present a slightly different collection of workshops. You can also search by date in our workshops calendar.

Most Student Learning Commons workshops, including workshop recordings viewed online, are eligible for inclusion on your Co-Curricular Record. To receive Co-Curricular credits, fill out the CCR Reflection Form.

Note: Students cannot receive Co-Curricular (CCR) credits for a workshop if the workshop is already being used to receive academic credit in a course.

The effect of passive cycling on cardiac function and spasticity

Will a machine pedaling your legs help your heart?

We are conducting a research study to find the answer. We are looking for men and women aged 19-50 years with and without Spinal Cord Injury to take part in a study examining the effects of passive and active cycling on the heart.

You can help improve the treatment of spinal cord injuries, strokes, and other neurologic illness.

Your participation in this study will involve tests of your heart function, and will take about 1.5 hours. This will be done while you sit in a wheelchair and have your feet pedaled by a bicycle-like machine.

Are you available to work a few hours/week with a child, and have some experience or training with intellectual disabilities? If so, we’d love to hear from you!

The Developmental Disabilities Association is seeking contracted Respite Caregivers for 1:1 support for children with intellectual disabilities (e.g. autism) to access their community. Sessions are 3-5 hours long and are on weekends or after school.   

Requirements: valid First Aid with CPR, clear criminal record, references, some training or work/volunteer experience in a field related to developmental disabilities.

Wages are $16/hour or $18/hr for individuals with higher support needs.

Student Job Posting: Indigenous graphic designer to support the RESPECT project

Dr. Pidgeon is looking to expand her curriculum development team with a motivated, responsible, and team-oriented Indigenous graphic designer to support the RESPECT project, which responds directly to SFU's ARC report's, Walk This Path With Us, Call #7: “Develop intervention programs teaching cultural safety and anti-racism for all employees at SFU”. The successful applicant will be an integral member of a team involved in multi-faceted curriculum development project that will be deadline oriented.

Qualifications:

  • Current enrollment in a college or university program with course work in graphic design
    (or any equivalent combination of experience or training) is required.
  • The ideal candidate must be a team player with a collaborative working style, have good communication skills, and have the ability to complete project work independently.
  • Expertise in generating visuals in software program in tight timelines.
  • Applicant must have reliable internet and a computer able to run the newest version of Office 365, Zoom, and other required software programs.
  • Ability to break down / paraphrase academic and/or other text into plain language with corresponding visuals.
  • Comfortable with providing citations and honouring licensing requirements for all work.

Hours and Compensation:

  • Approximately 130 hours (~5 hours/week) – although additional hours may be available if needed to meet evolving project needs.
  • Compensation (range $20 - $30 an hour) to be determined based on previous experience and the skill set of successful applicant.

Behaviour Interventionist Opportunity

Stepping Stones Consultants is an agency seeking individuals interested in working with children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and other disorders (ADHD/ADD, ODD, GAD, etc.) in the role of a Behaviour Interventionist (BI). The successful candidate will implement a home-based therapy program under the guidance of a Board-Certified Behaviour Consultant (BC). Therapy includes working 1:1 sessions targeting play, academic, social, communication, self-management, and self-care skills.

This position is perfect for those with a background in/goals towards a career in speech-language pathology, education, psychology, social services, rehabilitation sciences, occupational therapy, and the like.

Compensation:
$15 per hour, increasing to $20 per hour after the first 3-month probationary period, with opportunities for raises every 6 months thereafter.  

Qualifications:
- Energetic, punctual, patient, and interested in supporting growth in children
- At least 19 years of age
- Have strong communication and play skills
- Able to commit to the position for at least 6 months
- Having your own vehicle is an asset

Research Technician - The Vocadlo research group

The Vocadlo research group is seeking a Research Technician, to join our team located in the Department of Molecular Biology and Biochemistry and the Department of Chemistry at Simon Fraser University.

Our interdisciplinary team comprises both biologists and chemists that focus on addressing fundamental questions relating to the roles of carbohydrate processing enzymes in human health and disease. We use a range of methods from biochemistry to cell biology and leverage expertise in chemical biology to create and exploit new research tools.

The successful applicant(s) will work as part of this well-funded and collegial team with a principal role being to assist in research efforts into the roles of enzymes genetically or pharmacologically linked to diseases of the central nervous system (CNS). Prospective projects benefit from a great depth of preliminary research and involve the use of human patient iPSC-derived cell models of monogenic and polygenic CNS diseases.
