Paul Sobey

Biography

Dr. Paul Sobey has been a full-time addiction medicine physician since completing fellowship training in Addiction Medicine at University Hospitals of Cleveland and Case Western Reserve University in 1999. He was formerly a family doctor in Surrey for 12 years. Dr. Sobey interests are in occupation and recovery oriented addiction medicine and he acts as an Occupational Addiction Medicine consultant to both public and private organizations. He is a past President of the Canadian Society of Addiction Medicine. He received a Certificate of Added Competence in Addiction Medicine from the College of Family Physicians of Canada in 2019. He received Board Certification from the American Board of Addiction Medicine in 2010. He is a Clinical Instructor, with the UBC Faculty of Medicine, Department of Family Practice and an Adjunct Professor at Simon Fraser University. He is the former Lead Physician of the Royal Columbian Hospital Addiction Medicine service, the former Regional Divisional Lead for Addictions in the Fraser Health Authority and the former chair of BC College of Physicians and Surgeons Methadone Maintenance Committee. Dr. Sobey has worked extensively in both harm reduction and in abstinence based care models.

Teaching interests

I am interested in providing students with the necessary quantitative skills in epidemiology and biostatistics to operate in academic and applied public health environments.
