Program/Degree: Educational Technology & Learning Design MEd
"I’m grateful that my multi-disciplinary training affords me the opportunity to make connections bridging communications, publishing, liberal arts, business and education."
I am a writer, speaker, and instructor focused on digital living. Through my work, I explore online communities, digital relationship building, data decluttering, content planning and other digital life skills. I love to teach and help adult learners explore new ways of using (or not using) technology. To share my work with a wider audience, I have written four books; most recently The Content Planner and Declutter Your Data. Please tell us why you chose the Faculty of Education at SFU for your studies.
As third generation alumni, I know firsthand the quality of SFU’s programs from a number of faculties. I was excited to discover the Education Technology and Learning Design program, a perfect bridge between aspects of my earlier work in adult education and digital living. Looking ahead, I am keen to apply what I have learned in my future books, workshops and courses.
Who is a faculty member you have enjoyed working with and why?
The bulk of my coursework has been with Dr. Engida Gebre. I admire his passion for research and his steadfast commitment to guide students through the experiences that are, in themselves, the lessons.
What inspires you to learn and to continue your education?
I believe in lifelong learning. There are always new topics to explore and updated research to consider. I’m grateful that my multi-disciplinary training affords me the opportunity to make connections bridging communications, publishing, liberal arts, business, and education.
What would you say to prospective students who are considering graduate school in the Faculty of Education?
Don’t hesitate! SFU’s Faculty of Education programs offer tremendous scope for a wide range of interests. And within your future cohort, the instructors and classmates who will share the journey are, without question, going to be some of the most interesting and thought-provoking people you will ever meet.
Is there anything else you wish to share?
As a personal aside, my Mum, Yvonne Roberge (née Evans), was a charter student in Education. SFU has changed a lot since her first class in September 1965. I treasure that connection with her as I study in the same faculty more than 50 years later.
