Faculty of Education and You: Evelyn Hunter

EVELYN HUNTER, A GRADE 5 TEACHER.

Year Graduated: 2023

Program: Professional Linking Program (PLP)

Evelyn Hunter has been working in the field of education for over 20 years as a STEM instructor in the independent system. In this role, she discovered her love of teaching. However, to develop her career, she needed to become certified through a teacher education program.

“I had a pretty good idea of my beliefs regarding my students and their education. However, the practicum made these philosophy statements come to life. My beliefs were solidified, and they took on deep relevance and meaning.”

“The program supported my belief that each student has value and deserves respect and dignity. I learned how to create safe learning environments where students could develop holistically – mind, body, spirit.”

“Positive experiences in the classroom influence attitudes about future learning opportunities. In a world that is often challenging and discouraging, I want to convey hope for a bright future."

“My PLP community consisted of teachers and paraprofessionals with varied backgrounds, experiences, and worldviews. As we worked and studied collaboratively, our shared knowledge and insights contributed to our professional development.”

“The program offered insights into Indigenous perspectives, diversity, and inclusion, as well as intensive practice in the B.C. Curriculum. Learning from these areas has helped prepare me for my career as an educator.”

“SFU’s motto is “Nous sommes prets” – We are ready! I feel ready to engage in the many challenges of teaching. Versed in pedagogical theory and practice and the many aspects of the B.C. Curriculum, I feel well-equipped to lead and learn alongside my students."

“I gained confidence in my belief that educators can impact the lives of their students. My goal is that my students feel a sense of belonging in the classroom, that they feel loved and cared for by their learning community, and that they have hope for their future.”

“I advise future PLP students to approach their learning journey with an open mind and to feel confident in their own contributions to their learning community."
