SFU Surrey Community Counselling: Celebrating Growth & New Beginnings

On November 2, 2023, the SFU Surrey Counselling Centre celebrated a significant milestone in its 13-year history with the grand opening of its new location and a rebranding to SFU Surrey Community Counselling. Hosted at the SFU Surrey Campus, this event served as a testament to the connections forged, the lives positively impacted, and the enduring influence on the community.

Milestones

  • 2008: The clinic, initiated by Drs. Patrice Keats, David Paterson, and Natalie Popadiuk, was launched in September 2008 with locations at the UBC New West Clinic Site and the SFU Health and Counselling Services.
  • 2009: The clinic officially opened and welcomed its first clients at LA Matheson Secondary in Surrey School District 36.
  • 2019: In partnership with the City of Surrey, the SAFE (Surrey Anti-Gang Family Empowerment Program) was added, offering important community services to individuals and families at risk for gang related involvement in Surrey. 
  • 2020–2022: Throughout the pandemic, the clinic adapted by offering a comprehensive online training program and delivering clinic services entirely through virtual means.
  • 2023: The clinic celebrates its official grand opening on November 2, 2023, at the Surrey campus.
