$5 Handshake: Art on Treaty 8 Territory

101, 816 Alaska Avenue, Dawson Creek BC
With music by Garry Oker and others. Artists and curators in attendance.

$5 Handshake: Art on Treaty 8 Territory is the fourth title in SFU Galleries Critical Reader Series. A corollary to the 2017 group exhibition Maps and Dreams at Audain Gallery, the publication takes up conceptions and implications of land use through cultural and industrial lenses, specifically in relationship to the territory of the Dane-zaa people of northeastern British Columbia, now in Treaty 8.

It features new texts by artist Brenda Draney, researcher Kate Hennessy, curator Candice Hopkins, and the exhibition curators, Brian Jungen and Melanie O'Brian, as well as a reprinted chapter from Hugh Brody's 1981 anthropological study Maps and Dreams from which the exhibition borrowed its title. Artists in the exhibition were Jack Askoty, Brittney Bear Hat, Richelle Bear Hat, Jennifer Bowes, Brenda Draney, Emilie Mattson, Karl Mattson, Garry Oker, and Peter von Tiesenhausen.

Titles in the SFU Galleries Critical Reader Series are $15CND and can be purchased on our website. $5 Handshake: Art on Treaty 8 Territory will be available for purchase late May.
