Weegee's New York

May 6 – June 24, 2006
SFU Gallery

This exhibition of vintage prints covers the two main facets of Weegee's working life as a photographer — his street pictures and his later distortion experiments.

The images come from the collection of Weegee's niece, Ellen Newberg, and her husband Alan Newberg. They acquired the photographs while visiting Weegee's studio in the late 1950s and throughout the 1960s.

Alan Newberg will talk at the opening on how the collection came about and will provide some personal observations on Weegee and his times that are not available in any current sources. This is the first Canadian exhibition of this important collection of Weegee material.

Curated by Bill Jeffries.
