A collaborative performance by Vancouver artists Dana Claxton and Bo Myers.

Claxton and Myers invite you to join them in closing the Vancouver iteration of Wild New Territories in the early evening light. This new performance work considers notions of shelter, hospitality and the experience of light in connection with land, water, body and cosmos.

Dana Claxton works in film, video, photography, installation and performance art. Her practice investigates beauty, the body, the socio-political and the spiritual. Her work has been shown internationally; including at Museum of Modern Art, Walker Art Centre, Sundance Film Festival, Eiteljorg Museum and Museum of Contemporary Art (Sydney) and is held in public collections such as Vancouver Art Gallery, National Gallery of Canada, Art Bank of Canada and Winnipeg Art Gallery. She has received numerous awards including the VIVA Award and the Eiteljorg Fellowship.

Bo Myers is a Vancouver based artist and filmmaker. Her interests include history, memory, and the politics and poetics of emergence, most recently in application to questions of ecology. Her work has been exhibited widely, including at Vancouver International Film Festival, Montreal International Film Festival, Portland International Film Festival, Melbourne International Film Festival, MIX NYC, IMAGES, Cannes Short Film Corner, Charles H. Scott Gallery, John Hansard Gallery, Commonwealth Games, and CBC's Zed TV. Film awards include those garnered in Toronto, Yorkton, San Francisco and Mexico City. She has a BA in history and political science from McGill University, an MA in media arts from Emily Carr, and sits on the Board of Directors at Grunt Gallery.

WILD NEW TERRITORIES SPEAKER SERIES
MARCH 6 AND 17 2013 | COAL HARBOUR COMMUNITY CENTRE

As part of the exhibition Wild New Territories - currently on view at Simon Fraser University Gallery and Teck Gallery with outdoor installations along Coal Harbour and into Stanley Park - two series of talks will be presented at Coal Harbour Community Centre, 480 Broughton Street, Vancouver.

On Wednesday, March 6 at 7:00 - 8:30PM the talks will focus on the environmental themes that inform the exhibition and will showcase wildlife conservation efforts that are currently being undertaken around Vancouver's urban landscape as part of the exploration of the 'urban' and 'wild' the exhibition proposes.

Artist and co-curator Ron den Daas of Wild New Territories will introduce the evening and discuss how the collaborative partner organizations help inform the exhibition and related workshops.

Sandie Hollick Kenyon from DFO Salmon Enhancement Program will discuss stream restoration in Vancouver's urban boundaries. Biologist Doug Swanston will present exciting underwater images from Burrard Inlet and discuss aquatic habitat restoration work he is involved in. A speaker from Port Metro Vancouver will introduce the audience to restoration work that has been undertaken around Canada Place and in Burrard Inlet.

There will be a special screening of a 10 minute program featuring video works from participating Wild New Territories artists at 6:30PM on the Canada Place Screen at Canada Place prior to the scheduled 7PM Talk.


On Sunday, March 17 at 2:00 - 3:30PM the talks will focus on work in the exhibition.

Ron den Daas will present a slide show featuring the 2012 London, UK version of the exhibition on view at Camley Street Natural Park and the Foundling Museum. He will also discuss the upcoming iteration of the project at The Historical Botanical Museum and Gardens in Berlin, Germany.

Artist Cornelia Wyngaarden will discuss her multi-panel text work Philosophers Walk installed along the Coal Harbour promenade, as well as her related two-channel video. Artist Bo Myers will discuss her series Excavate i - iv which included a performance presented collaboratively with Warren Arcan and Cris Derksen. Rob Scharein will discuss his role in the experimental media work La Wefan Manigua that was undertaken with artists Jamie Griffiths and Diego Samper.
