Introduction

Lewis's Woodpecker

The Lewis's Woodpecker is a small to medium-sized North American insectivorous species of bird (Winkler, Christie, & Nurney, 1995) and is currently experiencing population decline (Cooper and Beauchesne, 2000; Zhu, Srivastava, Smith, & Martin, 2012). They are a migratory species that ranges along the west coast of North America. During the summer breeding season, they are mostly located in the British Columbian Interior. During the off season, they dwell as far south as South California. They typically nest in tree cavities in various tree species as well as burned forests. They enjoy open woodlands and are aerial foragers.
