Objectives

The aim of this project was to model the cellular network and simulate the networks response to a natural hazard. Specific objectives included:

  • Simulating earthquakes in the Fraser Valley and assessing their impact. Nhematis, by Nobility Software, allowed us to model earthquakes in the Vancouver region.
  • Modelling the cellular telecommunications network in the GVRD
  • Modelling human factors such as traffic flow, cell phone usage, and population convergence
  • Combining all of the above into a model that will assess the potential problems that may arise in the event of an earthquake

A secondary objective was to highlight the potential of GIS as a tool for modelling hazards and modelling cellular telecommunications networks.
