Citizenship and The Environment

Environmental Citizenship involves an active commitment to participate in the support of ecologically sustainable communities that are sensitive to the needs of both humans and of the ecosystem as a whole. The Environmental Citizenship Working Group consists of faculty, students and professionals in various fields who share an interest in environmental issues. Our initial focus has been on developing or facilitating the capacity for environmental citizenship rather than in defining what it might consist of, our hope being that a definition or concept will flow from the practices we observe. To this end, we are each identifying outstanding examples of individual, group or corporate (including government) environmental citizenship. In discussing these examples we hope to move closer to a set of criteria and in 2006 host a public symposium on environmental citizenship in action featuring the examples we have identified.
