Citizenship and The University

The emphasis of this group is to reflect on what the university allows faculty and students to do as citizens or what types of citizenship the university environment prevents or discourages. Two areas of inquiry will focus on the following questions:

  1. To what extent do different groups within the university have, or take opportunities to practice citizenship? How does the institution constrain or enable citizenship? How should citizenship be practiced? Who gets to be a “citizen” within the university, and under what conditions?
  2. What is the role of the university, in its teaching and community engagements, in fostering wider forms of citizenship? What should it be? What impediments are there to richer forms of engagement?
