Citizenship and Modernity

The basic assumption of this study group is that “modernity” should be understood as the confluence of three distinct yet inter-related and, ultimately, contradictory historical streams: social modernization, philosophical modernity and aesthetic modernism. All three dimensions of modernity can be understood as structured by different grammars. Yet the guiding concept, however differently inflected, is that of autonomy. This inter-disciplinary working group will examine the contradictory relations between all three aspects of modernity, particularly as these contradictions become manifest in the theory and practice of citizenship.
