On March 29-30, 2014, the IRMACS Centre will host the Mathematics and HIV, Operations Research and Network Modeling for HIV Treatment and Prevention Workshop. This workshop, organized by the IMAPCT-HIV group will study current knowledge and potential approaches that could arise through combining network modeling and operations research to applications in HIV epidemiology. This year's IRMACS Centre's Pi Day celebration will take place on Friday, March 14, starting at 11:30. Dr. Veselin Jungic of the SFU Department of Mathematics and The IRMACS Centre will give a presentation titled "Pi Day Trivia: An Experiment." Regardless of the success of our experiment everybody will get to enjoy a piece of pie at the end! Dr. Jungic's talk is intended for a general audience and should be a great deal of fun.

The IRMACS Centre's hosted and supported "A Taste Of Pi" series of talks and activities for high school students will start its 11th season on Saturday, March 8, 2014. All of us from the IRMACS Centre wholeheartedly congratulate the organizers and participants of the series on their very successful first 10 years!

Dr. Veselin Jungic, a deputy director of the IRMACS Centre, was recently awarded another NSERC PromoScience grant. This new grant will provide major support for "The SFU Academic Summer Camp for Aboriginal Students", a joint initiative by the Faculty of Science, the Office for Aboriginal Peoples, PIMS, the Department of Mathematics, and the IRMACS Centre.

On Friday, January 31, the IRMACS Centre will host the first event in the series "SFU Research Masterclass". The format of each event will be a sit down session with an interviewer, rather than a standard presentation format. This is followed by a Q&A with the audience.  The first interviewee is Dr. George Nicholas, Department of Archeology and the IPinCH Project. For more details click here.

January 22, 2014

On January 20th, 2014, the IRMACS Centre hosted a delegation from the University of British Columbia - Okanagan, led by Dr. Roger Sugden, Adviser to the Principal on Innovation and Economic Development, UBC O. Dr. Sugden was interested in understanding how the IRMACS Centre operates, its history, and the future plans.  Future collaboration between the IRMACS Centre and UBC-O were discussed.

The topic of the Spring 2014 Coast to Coast seminar series is "Technology for Aging Well" and it is built around a pan-Canadian project titled AGE-WELL. The focus of the series will be a discussion how to use technology in helping support the Canadian aging population to ensure that all Canadians can grow older with dignity and grace. Coordinators of the series are Dr. Andrew Sixsmith, Director of the SFU Gerontology Research Centre and a Deputy Director of the IRMACS Centre, and Dr. Alex Mihailidis, the Barbara G. Stymiest Research Chair in Rehabilitation Technology at the University of Toronto and Toronto Rehab Institute.

The CANARIE Research Advisory Committee has selected for funding the proposal titled "iReceptor – A Distributed Data Management System and Scientific Gateway for Mining “Next Generation” Sequence Data from Immune Responses". The leading researchers on this proposal were Dr. Felix Breden, the IRMACS Centre's Executive Director, and Dr. Brian Corrie, the IRMACS Centre's Technical Director.

Dr. Brian Corrie, IRMACS Technical Director, participated in SC13, the International Conference for High Performance Computing, Network, Storage and Analysis, that was held in Denver, Colorado, this week. Ms. Pam Borghardt, the IRMACS Managing Director, and Dr. Veselin Jungic, an IRMACS Deputy Director, are participating in the 5th Canadian Science Policy Conference, held in Toronto, Ontario, this week.
