Dr. Bozena Kaminska, the Canada Research Chair in Wireless Sensor Networks and a long term IRMACS project leader, has been appointed as a new member to the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) board. Congratulations, Bozena!

For the next few years the IRMACS Centre will be the home for the members of the Bipolar Affective Disorder and older Adults (BADAS) Study Project. The Study is led by Dr. Norm O'Rourke, Associate Professor in the Department of Gerontology, with Drs. Borwein and Sixsmith as principal co-investigators. Welcome BADAS!

On February 15, 2013, the IRMACS Centre will host the 2nd Annual HESP Symposium. The symposium is a joint initiative of the Human Evolutionary Studies Program (HESP) at SFU and the Cultural Evolution of Religion Research Consortium at UBC. This symposium seeks to change this state of affairs by bringing together archaeologists, anthropologists, and psychologists to discuss the hypothesis that religious beliefs and practises facilitate the emergence of large-scale, complex societies by enhancing within-group cooperation.

Dr. Krisztina Vasarhelyi, a long term IRMACS member and one of the leaders of the HIV-IMPACT Research Group, is the principal investigator on the project "Operational Modelling for the Implementation of Treatment as Prevention Programs to Contain the HIV/AIDS Epidemic" that was recently awarded a substantial CIHR grant. Among co-investigators on the project are three other IRMACS project leaders, P. Borwein, R. Hogg, and A. Rutherford. Congratulations to all!

Dr. Arne Mooers, a Professor in the SFU Department of Biology and a long term IRMACS project leader, was recently featured on Mooney, an Irish radio programme broadcast on RTÉ Radio 1.  Arne was introduced to the audience as "one of the people who drew up the Avian Family tree."  Full Podcast is available at http://at.sfu.ca/ooZSgI.

Dr. Veselin Jungic, an IRMACS project leader and an IRMACS Deputy Director, has accepted the role of the Associate Chair in the Department of Mathematics. In this new role Veselin will continue to split his time between the IRMACS Centre and the Department of Mathematics. Congratulations Veso!

Ms. Pam Borghardt, who has been the Managing Director of the IRMACS Centre for more than eight years has taken the role of the Director, Administration, VP Research Centre - IRMACS. In this new role, which comes with additional responsibilities, Ms. Borghardt will continue to contribute to the Centre's success in a major way. Congratulations and good luck, Pam!

The IRMACS Centre is proud to announce the world premiere of the fourth Small Number animated film titled "Small Number and the Skateboard Park". The premiere will take place in the IRMACS Centre as part of the IRMACS Community Christmas Celebration on Friday, December 7, 2:45-3:00. The Small Number animated film collection is part of the Math Catcher: Mathematics Through Aboriginal Storytelling Outreach Program.
