The application deadline for the IRMACS Centre's sponsored "Peter Borwein Annual Graduate Scholarship in Mathematical and Computational Modelling of Complex Systems" is May 30, 2013. The award is intended to provide financial support for a student, who in the course of pursuing a graduate degree at SFU, creates mathematical and/or computational models for a complex, real-world problem relevant to social welfare, public health, crime reduction policies, homelessness, or public safety and security. Dr. Peter Borwein, the IRMACS Centre Executive Director, has decided that after more than 10 years of leading the IRMACS Centre to move in to the position of IRMACS Centre Founding Director. This change will happen after the IRMACS Board completes a search for a new Executive Director. Each of us at the IRMACS Centre would like to thank Peter for his leadership, his friendship and for his commitment to building a centre that has become an invaluable part of the SFU research environment.

On May 16th, the IRMACS Centre will host another installment of the very successful SFU Faculty of Science "Nobel Lecture" Series. The presenter will be Dr. Esther Verheyen, Professor of Molecular Biology and Biochemistry, and she will discuss Sir John B. Gurdon's and Dr. Shinya Yamanaka's prize for "the discovery that mature cells can be reprogrammed to become pluripotent".

A project led by Dr. Ash Parameswaran, a professor in the SFU School of Engineering and long term IRMACS member, is among 102 global research projects to receive $100,000 each through the federal government’s Stars in Global Health program. Congratulations, Dr. Parameswaran!

Dr. Patricia Brantingham and Dr. Bob Hogg, two IRMACS project leaders, were among the keynote speakers at the "The Data Effect: Tomorrow's Canada Today" workshop. The workshop addressed the question "how the prudent and innovative use of Big Data can improve outcomes in such areas as health care, drug and social policy research and public safety." Ms. Pam Borghardt, IRMACS Managing Director, and Dr. Brian Corrie, IRMACS Technical Director, also represented IRMACS at the workshop.

Dr. Mario Pinto, Chair of the IRMACS Board of Trusties and Mr. Eric LeGresley, a student from St. John Brebeuf Secondary, Abbotsford, BC, have recently published, together with Kyle T. Greenway, a joint paper titled "The Influence of 150-Cavity Binders on the Dynamics of Influenza A Neuraminidases as Revealed by Molecular Dynamics Simulations and Combined Clustering". Mr. LeGresley was introduced to Dr. Pinto after Dr. Pinto's "A Taste Of Pi" presentation, an IRMACS sponsored event.

On Friday, April 12th, 2013, the IRMACS Centre will host its 8th Annual IRMACS Day. This event is also dedicated to Dr. Peter Borwein, the Founding Director of the IRMACS Centre, on the occasion of his 60th birthday. On Thursday, April 4, 2013, Dr. Paul Dutton, The Jack and Nancy Farley University Professor in History, Department of Humanities, will be the last presenter in the IRMACS Centre's successful and well received The Royal Society of Canada Seminar Series. All of us at the IRMACS Centre would like to thank each of the presenters in the Series as well as the Royal Society of Canada and the Office of Vice President Research for their support.

On Thursday, March 28, 2013, the IRMACS Centre will host a presentation by Dr. Fernando Pereira, Research Director at Google. Dr. Pereira's talk, titled "Low-Pass Semantics" is part of the School of Computing Science Distinguished Lecture Series. Dr. Derek Bingham, a Professor in the SFU Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science and a long term IRMACS project leader is the winner of the Centre de Recherches Mathématiques – Statistical Society of Canada prize for 2013. Congratulations, Derek!
