Mathcity
The Language Production Lab sponsors a learning community, "Mathcity", centered around learning how to program in Matlab and Python and to create models that approximate human cognitive capacities. We are interested in modelling facts and behaviors associated with language learning, memory organization, speech production, and more general classification and categorization tasks. We are currently working on learning classification techniques and applying them to the analysis of gender assignment in various languages. Matlab and Python are very powerful tools for creating, testing, and visualizing these models, and they are free for all SFU students. The community is student-centered, where students lead on projects and collaborate to do something valuable to their careers. The Lab is a positive and supportive environment for learning, and we are serious about protecting the psychological safety of our members. Email <alderete@sfu.ca> if interested in joining.
