Student Engagement Initiative
Opportunities and scholarships are made available for students from member institutions to participate in various USR initiatives, with an aim to nurturing socially responsible global citizens.
- International Service Learning Programmes
The USRN has committed to develop a wide range of International Service Learning Programmes for students from all USRN member universities to participate. Recent programmes include Service Learning Programmes in Sichuan, China (post-disaster rehabilitation), Kyoto (active ageing), Cambodia (sustainability) and South Africa (community development). The Network will continue to explore international service learning opportunities for the member students.

(CLOSED) University of Pretoria, South Africa Community-based Project Module

Dates: June 30, 2019 - July 7, 2019
Attention SFU Faculty of Applied Sciences, Faculty of Science, and Faculty of Environment students, five selected second-year students enrolled for courses in Engineering or Built Environment or Information Technology are invited to do two weeks of community engagement work with the students enrolled in the JCP module. Students will work with two different JCP groups. The projects will take place during the University of Pretoria’s recess (from 30 June 2019 to 7 July 2019). The projects will fall within the range of possible projects that JCP students perform. The identified group members, as well as projects, will be forwarded to the successful candidates as soon as they become available. Host families will be in either Pretoria or Johannesburg, and projects will take place in areas surrounding either Pretoria or Johannesburg.

(CLOSED) Humanitarian & Sustainable Development Initiative (HDI)
APPLICATION DEADLINE: APRIL 7, 2019

Dates: June 9 - 23, 2019
In 2019, HDI welcomes application from university students (undergraduate and graduate), young scholars and practitioners to become HDI Fellows. The Fellows will then participate in three phases of capacity building:
- Face-to-face Classroom learning (June). A two-week summer academy inBeijing (June 9th-23rd) provides HDI Fellows with intensive learning activitiesincluding lectures, case studies, symposiums, field visits, simulation and team-learning.
- Community-based project planning (July-September). HDI Fellows areexpected to transform their knowledge and skills into a community-basedhumanitarian/development project plan and submit the plan online.
- Internship (since October). 5-10 Outstanding HDI Fellows will be recommended to access to short-term secondment/internship in international humanitarian and development partner organizations, including UN agencies and INGOs. During the secondment/internship (three to six months), HDI Fellows are also expected to accomplish an independent research on relevant topics.
Through a highly collaborative, practice-oriented learning process, the HDI Fellows will be expected to increase capacity with mastery of skills in leadership, management, communication and entrepreneurship relevant to the global humanitarian and sustainable development sectors.

(CLOSED) Diversity and Social Justice in Social Work Research, Practice and Education

During 27 – 31 May 2019, an international summer school program on “Diversity and Social Justice in Social Work Research, Practice and Education” will be hosted by KazNU in Almaty, Kazakhstan which enables students and professionals in social work and related human service fields to explore the meanings, practices and implications of social work from a diversity and social justice perspective. Participants will be engaged in lectures, small group discussions, multiple agency and organizations visits, cultural tours and informal interaction. They will learn about issues and challenges faced by social workers and innovative responses to them.
