AGM on Friday, May 21st, 2021

Dear Members of Academic Women,

On behalf of the executive committee, I am seeking nominations to fill the position of President and all four executive committee positions.

As President of SFU Academic Women, you would lead an executive committee and membership committed to improving the university operation and environment experienced by women faculty, and librarians working at SFU.

AW board positions are:  treasurer, secretary, and  2 members at large.

For details about these positions, please contact the current secretary, Anke Kessler.

These positions will be voted on at the upcoming AGM on Friday, May 21st, 2021.

Any AW member is eligible to nominate, stand for elections, and vote. If you would like to nominate someone (including yourself of course), please make sure you have their consent and let me know via email at akessler@sfu.ca. Ideally, I would like to receive nominations before the meeting but we can entertain short-notice nomination at the meeting itself as well.

Anke Kessler, on behalf of the AW board.

The Equity Myth: September 25th, 2017

Academic Women is proud to present three events on September 25th, 2017 related to the publication of The Equity Myth: Racialization and Indigeneity at Canadian Universities (UBC Press, 2017).

From 11:30am - 1pm, contributing author Dr. Malinda Smith will give a talk in the Diamond Alumni Centre at SFU Burnaby.

Preceding the talk, Academic Women will host a book discussion (10am -11:15am in AQ 6229) for those who want to get into the book more deeply, and strategize ways to enact some of its principles and recommendations in our departments, programs, and classrooms.

Finally, in AQ 6229 at 2pm, there will be an informal discussion with Dr. Smith for people of colour and indigenous people.

All events are open to people of all genders; students and staff are most welcome to attend. SFUFA has generously provided funding to support this event.

Malinda S. Smith is a Professor in the Department of Political Science, and president of the Academic Women’s Association at the University of Alberta. She teaches courses in international relations, gender and politics, and critical race studies.
