Celebrating SFU’s alumni community in Singapore

March 01, 2023

One of the most amazing parts of my job is being able to meet and connect with fellow SFU graduates around the world. Last month, I had the pleasure of traveling to Singapore to welcome guests to a very special reception for SFU alumni and friends—our first one in this beautiful city-state since 2019.

Our SFU team of President Joy Johnson and four other staff members (three of whom are also proud SFU graduates!) were thrilled to have more than 40 of you join us for a wonderful evening in the heart of Singapore’s heritage and arts precinct.

With a diverse and vibrant community of over 180,000 alumni residing in 145 countries, SFU has a dynamic network of 600 alumni in Singapore. A huge thanks goes to our dedicated alumni ambassadors, Steven Chia (BA ’97) and Cheryl Tan (BA ’10), who keep the SFU spirit strong in the region.

We are excited for more opportunities to catch up with our alumni and friends and reminisce about our SFU days. You can check out our upcoming events or keep an eye on your inbox for invites to future events like this. I look forward to meeting more of you soon!

To cap off our time in Singapore, here are three things you may not have known about SFU’s ties to the Asia Pacific:

  • SFU has 120+ institutional partnerships across the Asia Pacific, including active research connections with institutions like the National University of Singapore and Nanyang Technological University;
  • SFU is one of only two Canadian member institutions of the Association of Pacific Rim Universities, contributing our expertise on climate innovation and sustainable cities to address pressing issues affecting the world; and
  • SFU hosted the annual conference of the Asia-Pacific Association for International Education in 2022—the first time the event was held in North America.
