We're #1!

SFU is proud to have been named Canada’s No. 1 mid-size university in the 2027 Maclean’s University Rankings.

For the first time, Maclean’s annual rankings grouped schools according to their size – large, mid-size and small. Under Maclean’s previous ranking system, SFU was named Canada’s number one comprehensive university in 2026, a title the institution held in 17 of the last 18 years.

Meet SFU’s new Chancellor

“I came to SFU as a student never imagining the opportunities that SFU would open up for me.”

During the October’s Convocation, SFU alumnus Elio Luongo was installed as SFU’s 13th Chancellor. Hear him speak about his SFU story and why he is excited to return to the university in this leadership role.

Host Nations gift Indigenous place names to SFU

Working in partnership with Kwikwetlem, Tsleil-Waututh, Squamish and Musqueam Nations, and Indigenous members of the university community, SFU is grateful to have received Indigenous names for the Burnaby campus and four other locations on campus significant to Indigenous faculty, staff, and students.

Harnessing AI to revive Indigenous languages

Every two weeks, a language disappears. And with many communities having just a handful of speakers left, the race is on to save Indigenous languages in Canada and abroad. A new project hosted at SFU is helping Indigenous communities train a new generation of speakers and support them with technologies including artificial intelligence.
