Lecturer 

​​The Department of Archaeology at Simon Fraser University is seeking to fill one continuing Teaching Faculty appointment at the rank of Lecturer in Archaeology, with a preferred start date of January 1, 2027. 

​Simon Fraser University is consistently amongst the top-ranked universities in Canada and the Department of Archaeology has a very high reputation and is widely recognized internationally, being recently placed within the top 20 in the world, the top 10 in North America, and 2nd in Canada. 

​The Department has concentrated expertise in three areas – Lab-based archaeological sciences, First Nations Heritage and Resource Management, and Biological Anthropology, including Forensic sciences. We have a strong focus on high-quality lab, field, and community-based research and engagement, as well as on experiential training of our students. 

​We are seeking an archaeologist or biological anthropologist, with a PhD in Archaeology, Biological Anthropology, or related areas, with a strong track record and significant experience in teaching. Candidates should demonstrate a strong commitment to teaching, supported by evidence of ongoing professional development in evidence-based teaching and learning strategies. 

​We seek a versatile instructor to enhance our strengths in training in Archaeology and Biological Anthropology, namely by teaching our introductory lower-division courses, both in person and online (ARCH 100, 101, 131), as well as upper-division courses appropriate to the candidate's areas of expertise and experience. The candidate should demonstrate an excellent understanding of current issues, methods, and discoveries.  The candidate is also expected to serve the Department, the University, and the larger community by contributing to committee work and to departmental initiatives. This position is dedicated solely to teaching and service, and our normal teaching load for a Lecturer is 8 courses/year (which may include repeated offerings of some lower level courses).

​Faculty salaries at SFU are based on the salary scales bargained between the University and the SFU Faculty Association. A reasonable estimate of the salary range for this position is $98,340 to $114,241. Candidates for the Lecturer position must have a PhD by the employment start date; however, PhD candidates with a solid indication of imminent completion (e.g., a confirmed defense date) may be considered. A reasonable estimate for the salary for a PhD candidate is $98,340. Teaching Faculty are eligible for course releases, non-teaching semesters, and study leaves, in accordance with the SFUFA/SFU Collective agreement (https://www.sfu.ca/faculty-relations/collectiveagreement.html).

​Candidates should submit a maximum 2-page cover letter, a curriculum vitae, a teaching dossier, and the names of three referees (reference letters are not required at this stage). The teaching dossier (4-page maximum plus appendix), should include: 1) a career overview of teaching activities and responsibilities, 2) a statement of teaching philosophy, and 3) a self-reflection commentary addressing an understanding of current archaeological issues, and how they are incorporated into teaching.  An appendix (20-page maximum) including samples of prepared course materials, such as syllabi, handouts, assignments, and/or examinations.

Assistant or Associate Professor in Indigenous Environmental Governance and Management | Application deadline extended to April 30, 2026

About the Program and Job Description

The School of Resource and Environmental Management (REM) at Simon Fraser University (SFU) invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor in Indigenous Environmental Governance and Management. Starting date for the position is negotiable, but we hope the successful candidate will assume the appointment by November 15, 2026.

This opportunity is limited to applicants who self-identify as Indigenous Persons who are First Nations, Métis and Inuit in Canada - pursuant to section 42(3) of the Code. The University received approval from the British Columbia Human Rights Commissioner to limit recruitment and hiring for various faculty positions to those who self-identify as Indigenous Persons (First Nations, Métis and Inuit) - Under Section 1 of the B.C. Human Rights Code, Indigenous Peoples meaning is as defined in the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act -which further states that "Indigenous Peoples" has the same meaning as aboriginal peoples in section 35 of the Canadian constitution. We are interested in applications from Indigenous Persons scholars who will advance environmental governance and management issues, decolonization, and reconciliation as they relate to Indigenous communities in Canada and beyond through interdisciplinary research, teaching, mentoring, and community engagement. We seek a collaborative colleague who will address topics related to marine or terrestrial caretaking practices, environmental governance and management, sovereignty and self-determination, Indigenous law, land use planning, cultural land management, economic development and community well-being, social-ecological systems, food security, climate change, or aquatic management.

The candidate should hold a PhD. Relevant background disciplines include Indigenous studies, anthropology, sociology, community and regional planning, political science, environmental or social history, geography, human ecology, economics, business, or law. Preference will be for candidates with experience conducting community-engaged research with Indigenous communities. 

PhD candidates with solid indication of imminent completion may be hired at the rank of Instructor and will be promoted to the rank of Assistant Professor upon completion of the PhD. Under exceptional circumstances we may consider outstanding candidates with a mix of education and experience that could be considered equivalent to the PhD. 

The successful candidate will be expected to develop a nationally and internationally recognized program of research. Other expectations include graduate and undergraduate teaching, graduate research supervision, knowledge mobilization and engagement with Indigenous communities. The candidate would be expected to teach core courses in Indigenous Governance including REM 207 (Indigenous Peoples and Resource Management), REM/PLAN 404 (Indigenous Planning and Stewardship) and REM/PLAN 407/607 (Indigenous Governance and Resource Relationships), as well as one of REM 100 (Global Change) or REM 200 (Resource Management in Canada) and/or other courses related to the candidate’s field of specialization.
