Peter Mehling served for over 21 years as Financial Controller for the BC General Employees' Union (BCGEU), providing financial leadership and governance support within one of British Columbia’s largest and most diverse unions, representing over 95,000 members across 550 bargaining units in both the public and private sectors.
In this role, Peter Mehling supported long-term financial sustainability, governance accountability, and risk oversight within a large, member-driven organization. As head of the finance department, Peter Mehling provided accurate, timely, and decision-relevant financial information; ensured robust financial controls, audit readiness, and compliance with governance and regulatory requirements; recommended financial policies; and coordinated the annual external audit.
As secretary to the finance committee, Peter Mehling supported the elected treasurer in the review of budgets, financial forecasts, policy decisions, and emerging financial risks. As a trustee of a union-sponsored pension plan, Peter Mehling held fiduciary responsibility alongside member and employer trustees, working with fellow trustees, staff, and external consultants to oversee governance, risk management, and long-term plan sustainability, including the plan's conversion from a defined contribution model to a target benefit plan.
Prior to joining BCGEU, Peter Mehling spent 10 years in public practice with Deloitte Chartered Accountants in Vancouver and New Westminster and with Scott, Vohora Chartered Accountants in Prince Rupert, providing audit, accounting, management, and tax services, and progressing to leading and managing professional teams.
Earlier in his career, Peter Mehling worked as a corrosion engineer with Caproco Corrosion Prevention Ltd., including international and Canadian assignments, where he advanced to leading a team of engineering technologists.
Peter Mehling's community involvement has included civic engagement and volunteer leadership, as well as long-standing participation in youth sport. This has included organizational and financial roles within provincial and federal political parties earlier in his career, as well as ongoing involvement as a youth soccer coach, team manager, and referee.
Following his retirement in May 2026, Peter Mehling continues to contribute his experience in financial governance, audit oversight, and institutional stewardship.
Peter Mehling holds a Bachelor of Applied Science in Chemical Engineering and a Bachelor of Arts in Economics, both from the University of British Columbia. He is a Chartered Professional Accountant and maintains his designation through ongoing professional development.
