SFU History alumnus Aaron Goings (PhD 2011) has been awarded a State History Award by the Michigan Historical Society for his book, Community in Conflict: A Working-class History of the 1913-14 Michigan Copper Strike and the Italian Hall Tragedy.

The book, co-authored with Gary Kaunonen, details the strikers' struggle to improve the poor working conditions and low wages that prevailed in the mines. It also uncovers the violence and intimidation used by the mining company against its striking workers. Their archival findings, which include labor spy reports, union newspapers, and coded messages, reveal previously unknown details about this turning-point in American labour history.

Dr. Goings, now an Assistant Professor at St. Martin's University, received a Dean's Convocation Medal while at SFU for his outstanding academic performance.

The SFU Department of History congratulates Dr. Goings on his continued success in the academic world.
