Now Accepting Applications for the The Centre for the Comparative Study of Muslim Societies and Cultures' Ninth Annual International Summer Program

Applications are invited to the ninth annual International Summer Program (ISP), Expressions of Diversity: An Introduction to Muslim Cultures.  The summer program is scheduled for July 11-16, 2016 at Simon Fraser University’s downtown Vancouver campus. The theme this year is “Knowledge, Power, and Identity in Muslim Contexts.”

The 2016 program features international scholars with modules on such topics as Islamophobia and orientalism as a form of knowing; knowledge and governance in the Ottoman empire; knowledge, power, and identities in Iranian Shi’ism; Islamic finance as knowledge and practice; interfaith interactions in early modern history; and questions of community in the interpretation of the Qur’an.

The 2016 ISP Visiting Professor is Dr. Karim H. Karim, Director of the Carleton Centre for the Study of Islam and the author or editor of numerous books, including the recent Re-Imagining the Other: Culture, Media, and Western-Muslim Intersections (Palgrave Macmillan, 2014) and  Engaging the Other: Public Policy and Western-Muslim Intersections (Palgrave Macmillan, 2014).

The International Summer Program is co-sponsored by the Centre for the Comparative Study of Muslim Societies and Cultures (Simon Fraser University) and the Institute for the Study of Muslim Civilisations (Aga Khan University, United Kingdom) and alternates annually between London and Vancouver.
