Labour Studies Reception in Celebration of the New Major

January 05, 2018

The Labour Studies Program held a reception on December 8th, 2017, in celebration of the launch of the new Major in Labour Studies. The reception, which was held at SFU Woodward, was attended by around 100 guests from SFU, the labour movement and the local community.

The speaking program began with a welcome and territorial acknowledgement from local elder Margaret George. Jim Sinclair, former President of the BC Federation of Labour and Chair of the Labour Studies Program Advisory Committee, reflected on the legacy of Margaret Morgan whose gift helped expand the Labour Studies Program as a degree-granting program. The Honorable Harry Bains, Minister of Labour, then spoke, followed by SFU President Andrew Petter and Dean Jane Pulkingham of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. Kendra Strauss, Director of the Labour Studies Program, recognized the many people who have contributed to the Program's success. The speaking program concluded with a reading from poet Kate Braid.

The Labour Studies Program offers a Certificate and Minor in Labour Studies. The Major launches in the Fall of 2018. More information can be found here http://www.sfu.ca/labour/undergrad-program.html
