The Teaching Support Staff Union at Simon Fraser University is seeking an Advocate, to commence work as soon as possible.

The Advocate reports to the Executive of the Union and works cooperatively with the elected Chief Stewards to handle grievances at all stages of the Grievance procedure, and is Spokesperson at the Bargaining table. This is a “development” position: The Advocate, having successfully achieved established benchmarks in formal arbitration, will be advanced to a more senior category. The ideal candidate will possess:

-effective labour advocacy skills
-demonstrated strategic skills applicable to advancing workers’ rights in a University setting, contributing to campaign planning and bargaining strategy to achieve good outcomes
-experience interpreting and applying BC labour law
-demonstrated capacity to utilize labour advocacy to promote activism
-experience working in and with democratic structures, and promoting democratic practice in a non-hierarchical organization
-knowledge and experience with bargaining (including costing and language preparation)
-excellent writing and communication skills

Salary is $75,000 per year, 35 hours per week. This is a Unionized position.
