Livable and Sustainable Jericho Lands: a New, innovative Neighbourhood for Vancouver? | City Conversations

Cities, Climate + Environment, 2014, Summit Innovation The Shock of the Possible, Economy, Series City Conversations

Can Vancouver create a new neighbourhood that is beautiful, interesting and joyful— and which also creates its own energy, uses its own water, and produces no waste? Could the Jericho Lands— the military base across W. Fourth Ave from Jericho Beach Park— be that neighbourhood? The military is leaving, and 62 acres will be owned by a partnership of the federal government, three First Nations and the City. Vancouver has been a North American leader in creating innovative, livable and sustainable neighbourhoods, starting with Southeast False Creek. What can we learn from first-generation livable and sustainable European neighbourhoods, to become world leaders?

Exploring this amazing opportunity are Joyce Drohan, Director of Urban Design at Perkins + Will, Vancouver, a lead member of the design team for Vancouver’s first livable and sustainable community, Southeast False Creek; and Maged Senbel, an Associate Professor, UBC School of Community and Regional Planning, who focuses on engaging the public in long term neighbourhood planning.

Then it’s your turn to question, comment and offer your opinions. You’re welcome to bring your lunch.

About Innovation: The Shock of the Possible

Are you ready to explore the opportunities and challenges presented by innovation? Our 2014 Community Summit took place October 19 to 24 in Vancouver, Burnaby and Surrey and included a diverse range of activities and events. We asked what innovation means for some of the most important social, environmental and economic issues facing communities in BC, Canada, and beyond. People joined us for an evening at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre with Ray Kurzweil, Richard Florida and Amanda Lang, an ideas competition addressing sea level rise, a young innovators crawl, a national forum on innovations in undergraduate learning and a roundtable on health technology and patient care.
