Student loans and grants

As a trimester-based university, students apply for funding each term. Approved government student aid is released starting on the first day of your study period.

At SFU, the study period ends on the last day of your term's final month. This will differ from your last exam date.

When to apply and key dates

Apply early for government student aid, as processing times vary.

Term Study Period Start Date Study Period End Date When to Apply
Spring 2026 January 5, 2026 April 30, 2026 Early December
Summer 2026 May 11, 2026 August 31, 2026 Early April
Fall 2026 September 9, 2026 December 31, 2026 Late July

If you are applying for StudentAid BC, the following are the latest recommended application dates for each term:

  • Spring 2026: March 15
  • Summer 2026: July 15
  • Fall 2026: November 15.

US Federal Direct Loans

If you are applying for U.S. Federal Direct Loans and will be studying at SFU for the first time in the Fall term, you may require a Cost of Attendance (COA) to support your study permit application.

To ensure your funding documentation is ready in time, we recommend submitting your application by May 29.

Applying by this date helps avoid delays in processing your loan and receiving the required documents.

Confirmation of enrolment for student aid and funding release

SFU confirms student aid enrolment approximately two weeks before classes begin.

  • Even if your enrolment is confirmed early, student aid funding will not be released until your study period starts
  • You should plan ahead to cover any upfront or living costs before that time.

Submitting a Confirmation of Enrolment request to the National Student Loan Service Centre (NSLSC):

  • Confirms your in-study, payment-free status for the current term only
  • Does not apply for additional student aid funding.

How your funding is paid

Once your enrolment is confirmed:

  • If you owe tuition or fees, SFU will request that a portion of your funding be sent directly to the university (up to the allowed amount).
  • Any remaining funds will be deposited into your bank account by the NSLSC.

If you have no outstanding fees, you will receive your full funding amount.
