Student loans and grants

As a trimester school, students can apply for funding on a term-by-term basis. Confirmed government student aid is disbursed to students starting the first official day of each term.  SFU considers your study period end date as the last day of the month in your final month of school each term. This date is different than the official last day of exams each term.

Term Study Period Start Date Study Period End Date When to Apply StudentAid BC Application Deadline
Spring 2027 January 5, 2027 April 30, 2027 Early December March 15, 2027
Summer 2027 May 10, 2027 August 31, 2027 Early April July 15, 2027
Fall 2027 September 8, 2027 December 31, 2027 Late July November 15, 2027

If you are applying for funding from a province other than BC, or US Federal Direct Loans, you are recommended to start the application process as early as possible. The application deadlines are approximate, and provided as a guideline of when is the last possible day to apply for StudentAid BC funding each term.

SFU provides confirmation of enrollment starting two weeks before classes start. Although confirmation may be provided early, funds are not released before your study period start date and you will need to plan accordingly. Submiting a request for confirmation of enrollment through the National Student Loan Service Centre (NSLSC) confirms your in-study status and is not an application for additional student aid.

When enrollment for your government student aid is provided, if you have current, outstanding tuition and fees, SFU will request that the amount of your outstanding fees be sent directly to SFU to reduce your outstanding amount (up to the deduction amount allowed by your government student aid office).  Any remaining funding will be sent to you, to the bank account provided by the student to NSLSC. If you do not have outstanding tuition and fees when confirmation of enrolment is provided, SFU will not request any funding to be sent to SFU and you will receive the entire amount of funding that you have been approved for.
