Study Abroad
Students participating in an Exchange or Field School offered through SFU’s International Services for Students (ISS) may be eligible for different types of funding. If you have questions about your Study Abroad experience, please contact a Financial Aid advisor for more information about eligibility for Financial Aid and Awards.
You are encouraged to develop an overall budget to explore all the costs associated with this opportunity and to understand what resources you will need to secure. ISS budgeting and planning resources contains useful information, such as the Study Abroad Budget Planning Worksheet to hwko you map out the specific costs associated with your international experience. These tools will help you plan for what your expenses will be for your Study Abroad term.
You can consider authorizing a third party to interact with SFU on your behalf when you are participating in your Study Abroad opportunity. An Information Release/Privacy Indicator is a service within the Student Center in the Student Information System that allows you to regulate third party access (i.e. an individual or an organization) to your personal information. Adding a F05 Authorization to Release Financial Aid Info authorizes your representative to have access to your Financial Aid and Awards information.
Scholarships, Awards, and Bursaries
SFU supports students participating in Study Abroad opportunities with Scholarships, Awards, and Bursaries during your enrolled Exchange or Field School term. Please visit our Application deadlines for information on when to submit your application(s).
The BC Scholarship Society offers International Scholarships for students participating in Study Abroad opportunities.
You are encouraged to review the Suite of Study Abroad Awards overseen by International Services for Students.
Visiting Students
If you are currently a student at another university, you may have been admitted to SFU as a “visiting” student in a “non-degree” program in order to participate in one of our Field School opportunities, such as our Nato Field School and Simulation Program. If you require government student aid, and are applying for assistance through SFU, you will need to provide Financial Aid and Awards with a copy of your Letter of Permission (LOP), or similar documentation, from your home institution to fiassist@sfu.ca. Your LOP should include the following information:
- Your program at your home institution; including your year of study and program length;
- Either list the courses being taken at SFU or participation in a specific Field School; and,
- Confirm that the courses being taken at SFU will be transferred to your home institution and applied towards the completion of your credential.
