Terms of Transition
SAGA researchers are compiling a multilingual glossary called Terms of Transition. Our research has uncovered a number of terms, in different languages, that have something interesting and important to say about the prospects for sustainable cities. To explore what we mean by Terms of Transition in different linguistic repertoires, click on one of the squares below. We know there are many more, out there in a variety of languages, uses and imaginations, and we would like to feature these further contributions. Please see our questionnaire below to suggest a new offering of language-specific terms that may advance a global socio-ecological urban transition.
Terms of Transition: Call for Submissions
Language (n., ca. 1300): The system of spoken or written communication used by a particular country, people, community, etc., typically consisting of words used within a regular grammatical and syntactic structure (OED, 2nd Ed.)
Language repertoire: The assemblage of language tools, terms, grammars and syntaxes that are known and used by an individual or group in a given context (sociolinguistics)
Is there a word or term in your language repertoire that comes up when you think about the challenge of urban ecological transition? But maybe the connection in meaning is not entirely clear at face value? The SAGA: Translanguaging and Sustainability project asks you to interpret this for us.
Your word or term may be in any language and may be associated with:
- A technology
- A personal story
- Something you have researched
- A picture
- A song
- Some other artefact of place, memory or material
Please share your term of transition with SAGA by using our short web submission form below. SAGA researchers will review your submission for uniqueness and meaning of the contribution it could make to our prospective glossary of Terms of Transition. We are hoping to grow this curated online glossary in a form that contributes to our collective understandings of shared efforts to make the urban changes that some of us recognize as budding and others know are needed.
*Submissions are accepted on a rolling basis. We will respond to all complete submissions received. We will endeavour to review submissions in the language of choice, and if we do not have the right language expertise in our team, we may reach out to you for recommendations of other speaker(s) to our interpretation and understanding.
