FIRST PEOPLES' GATHERING HOUSE MONTHLY UPDATE

May 31, 2021

ENGAGEMENT HIGHLIGHTS

During the month of May, presentations were made to the SFU Building Committee, of which includes student representation from the Department of Indigenous Studies and Indigenous Students Centre. Other groups, such as members of the City of Burnaby Planning and Building Department, were also involved in sharing their ideas with the committee.

COMMITTEE UPDATE

Ouri Scott, architect at Urban Arts Architecture Inc., and Kaylena Ryan will now work together as co-chairs for the Stakeholder Group Committee. Kaylena is well positioned for this since she is in constant communication with students through her role at the Indigenous Student Centre (ISC).

DESIGN UPDATE

With relentless effort, the Building Committee plans to integrate schematic designs and is strategizing about the development phase. An ongoing in-depth cost analysis has been issued by an independent quantity surveyor and the construction manager.

Moving forward, the next steps include submitting the various building permit applications. This involves both a demolition permit for removal of the Strand Hall Annex temporary structures and the preliminary planning approval permit for the new building.
