Welcome to the Department of Earth Sciences!
The Department of Earth Sciences was created in 1995 by Drs. Mike Roberts and Ted Hickin, who recognized the need for SFU Geoscience students to become registered with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia (APEGBC). Since then our Department has grown rapidly; presently we have 17 faculty and 18 adjunct Professors. This allows us to teach a broad spectrum of courses, covering both traditional geology and environmental topics – in short, we have “something for everyone”! Having expertise across the spectrum of the Earth Sciences allows us to mentor the varying interests of both undergraduate and graduate students. Our Department and its members have earned an international reputation for excellence in scientific research in the Earth Sciences.
Our undergraduate program has a strong field component with four field schools plus numerous field trips linked to a variety of required and optional courses. Undergraduate students can choose from two main streams: Environmental Geoscience and Geology. Both streams lead to professional registration with APEG BC, and exciting, well-paying careers. Graduate students can select a field matching the expertise of one of our faculty. Our graduates have had great success in finding employment in their fields of choice in the Earth Sciences.
Please browse our website for more information on Earth Sciences at Simon Fraser University – I'm convinced that you will be impressed with the opportunities that our department can offer. Prospective graduate students are encouraged to contact individual faculty to enquire about potential graduate theses.
