Educational Leadership: Imaginative K-12 Leadership MEd

OVERVIEW

This new program offering interweaves Educational Leadership and Imaginative Education, providing students with an interdisciplinary learning experience and offering them skills and knowledge that will support their leadership practices.

While maintaining the core topics of the Educational Leadership MEd program, our focus will centrally and consistently include the role of imagination, innovation and creativity in educational leadership.

Overall, participation in this cohort will afford students a coherent program of study that integrates theory with practice, in addition to an opportunity to engage in a research project.

This program develops the research capacity and leadership skills of educators who are currently working in K-12 contexts and will equip them for innovative practice in their schools. The graduates of our program are well placed to lead effectively and make carefully considered and evidence-based decisions as educational leaders in the BC K-12 system.

Students in this program will:

  • Situate one’s learning in a community of practice and engage with peers to form a community of inquiry (as a cohort).
  • Demonstrate a growth in imaginative/innovative leadership and learning.
  • Demonstrate personal and professional growth in one’s understanding and application of leadership in relation to one’s professional practice and program experiences.
  • Articulate a leadership framework that re-imagines how one is an ethical leader addressing equity, inclusion, and diversity in practice.
  • Exemplify how one’s leadership practice will implement principles of Indigeneity to support reconciliation and Indigenous education.
 
Note: This program is totally different than the MEd in Imaginative Education. The MEd in Imaginative Education is a curriculum-studies program designed for teachers that focuses on pedagogy and the B.C. Curriculum K-12. In contrast, this Leadership MEd focuses on educational leadership research, practice, and policy primarily but has an integrative theme of imagination connecting all the courses.  

Ideally Suited For

Practicing educators and administrators in the public, private, or independant K-12 school system who wish to improve their skills and knowledge that will support their leadership practices.

 

  • Location: SFU's Surrey campus
  • Classes: Fri. (4:30–9:00) + Sat. (8:30–4:30)/every 2-3weeks
  • Start Term: Fall 2019
  • End Term: Summer 2021

  • Tuition 2019/2020: $3,028.48/term*
