The Faculty of Education and the Education Graduate Student Association presents a lecture from
Visiting Scholar Dr. Rachel Washburn, Loyola Marymount University :
” Situational Analysis, Theoretical and Methodological Underpinnings ”
Date: March 13, 2012
Time: 4:30 to 6:30
Location: IRMACS Center Presentation Studio ASB-10900 (Burnaby Campus)
Situational Analysis, originally developed by Dr. Adele Clarke (2003) is an important ‘voice’ within current trans-disciplinary conversations on new ways of doing qualitative research after the postmodern turn. Situational analysis supplements traditional grounded theory with alternative modes of data gathering and analysis and it can be used with extant narrative, visual and, historical discourse materials. Dr. Rachel Washburn, previously a student of Adele Clarke’s, and now a collaborator, presents an introduction to the theory and methods of this innovative approach to research that is not only of interest to researchers in sociology, anthropology, and science and technology studies, but to the social sciences, including health and education.
Dr. Washburn is Assistant Professor of Sociology in Loyola Marymount University, Los Angeles. Her research areas include: Medical Sociology, Environmental Health, U.S.-Mexico Border, and Science and Technology Studies. Dr. Washburn has worked and continues to work closely with Dr. Adele Clarke.
Light refreshments will be served. This event is open to the public therefore seating will be based on a first come, first served basis.

movie summary:
If you wanted to change an ancient culture in a generation, how would you do it? You would change the way it educates its children. The U.S. Government knew this in the 19th century when it forced Native American children into government boarding schools. Today, volunteers build schools in traditional societies around the world, convinced that school is the only way to a ‘better’ life for indigenous children. But is this true? What really happens when we replace a traditional culture’s way of learning and understanding the world with our own? SCHOOLING THE WORLD takes a challenging, sometimes funny, ultimately deeply disturbing look at the effects of modern education on the world’s last sustainable indigenous cultures.

Last week we had our 10th annual Grad Student Retreat. We had a great turnout and a great time. We hope to see you there next year. Moreover, this year’s retreat focused on building student community, so in order to meet the needs of students to present their academic work a new conference has been created. We are very exited about this new conference and strongly encourage you to be part of it! Look for Student-Faculty conference on the menu on the right.
Moreover, we just elected our new executive committee:
I’d like to welcome and congratulate our new EGSA executives:
Co-President: Sanjoy Banerjee (we now are electing two co-presidents in place of a vp and president, and are still looking to fill
the second co-pres position)
Media Officer: Farnaz Badiee
GSS Representatives: Eleanora Joensuu and Cassandra Tymochenko
Surrey Liaisons: Fritzie Perez-Dingler and Yuting Zhao
TSSU Representative: Emily Sadowski
Our returning volunteers include
Graduate Programs Committee Rep: Marco Espinoza
Faculty Council Rep: Jennifer Jackson
Communications: yours truly
And I’d like to extend our deepest thanks to Julia Lane for her amazing and dedicated work as EGSA president this past year, and to our other outgoing dedicated volunteers, Mayumi Oka and Zana Becker. Thank you!
We still have openings for a treasurer, 2 social directors, 1 co-president, 1 GPC Rep, 3 alternate GSS Reps so please consider getting involved in the EGSA
Also consider getting involved with the SFU Education Review- our graduate student on-line journal. We even have some paid positions. Contact marco at maespino@sfu.ca for more info.
Our next meeting will be on Wednesday Nov 2 11-12 in the EGSA office
On the agenda are
