About the EGSA Community Development Grant (CDG)

1. The purpose of the “Community Development Grant” (CDG) is to build community within the SFU Faculty of Education, especially EGSA members.

2. Examples of community development activities are movie nights, seminar series, Grad Retreat, Learning Together Conference, Ed Review online publication, and so on. The central feature is that the community is to be composed mostly of EGSA members.

3. A suggestion is to divide GSS Caucus Funding in a 40/60 split: 40% for the CDG and 60% for the PDG.

4. Based on present GSS Caucus Funding of $10, 000, the CDG should receive $1300 per term (about $4000 per year).

5. To apply for a CDG, a student would have to attend an EGSA General Meeting to present the project.

6. The oral presentation does not have to be lengthy, but would have to satisfy the following criteria:

a. The community development event would have to clearly identify a predominant EGSA audience.

b. The event would have to demonstrate how it would develop the SFU education graduate student community in a meaningful way.

c. The successful applicant would have to report back to provide a post-event summary.

7. The EGSA membership that forms quorum at the General Meeting will decide whether to approve the application. The role of the EGSA membership present is not to ‘judge’ proposed community development activities. Their role is to encourage community building initiatives by evaluating an application in the most positive light possible.

8. Standard CDG funding is to be $200.

9. Amounts greater than $200 must be weighed in terms of the event’s value to the EGSA community. For example, an event like the Learning Together Conference with a principal audience of EGSA members and high profile within the Faculty of Education makes a strong application; whereas a request for an event like an art exhibit in an off campus location that does not clearly identify a predominant EGSA audience might not receive more than $200.

Eligibility
