Hidden Pasts, Digital Futures:
A Festival of Immersive Arts

SFU 50th Anniversary Cultural Programs
SEP 16 - OCT 18, 2015

Artists, scientists, writers, scholars, and technologists are just beginning to recognize and understand the potential of emerging digital technologies that create immersive augmented and virtual reality experiences. These advancements are leading us to invent hybrid interactive art forms and create new kinds of audience experiences that are popping up at film festivals, museums, art galleries and other interdisciplinary events around the world.

Digital Futures: The Impact of Immersive Media takes a critical look at what characterizes these new immersive forms of interactive content, their effective application, and what they may mean for the future of art media distribution.

Collectively our panelists will explore what an immersive digital future may look like from varying perspectives. They will address a number of questions about immersive art and our future. Does the medium offer new artistic frontiers? Does it fundamentally alter social interaction within cinemas or galleries? Do immersive arts create the possibility to expand and engage new audiences? Can 3D transcend gimmickry and deliver on its artistic promise? Most importantly is there any authenticity to experiencing art in virtual representation? Finally, is this a new art form?
