During last week's Computational Math Day Poster Session the first prize was awarded to Mr. Ali Nadal, a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Mathematics and an IRMACS member, for his poster titled "Stability and Bifurcation Analysis of a Consecutive Three-Disease Model". The runner up was another IRMACS member, Ms. Sarah Kok, an M. Sc. candidate in the Department of Mathematics. Congratulations to Ali and Sarah and their supervisors Borwein/Rutherford and Tupper/Rutherford!

In Fall 2012 the IRMACS Centre will host the 15th session of the Coast to Coast Seminar Series. The session theme will be "Open Communication of Science" and its coordinator is Professor Jonathan Moore from the SFU Biology Department. During the month of July, the IRMACS Centre will host two summer schools, "The IRMACS Modelling Summer School" http://thematic2012.irmacs.sfu.ca/events/modelling-summer-school-0,  July 9-20, and "Canadian Visual Analytics School (CANVAS) 2012", July 23-26 http://www.viva-viva.ca/newsandevents.html#CANVAS. We wish success to the participants and organizers of both schools.

As has been the tradition for several years now, during the first week of July the IRMACS Centre will host presentations for the participants of the regional CMS-PIMS Math Camp for high school students. In addition, during the same week the participants of the SFU Math Camp for Teachers, titled "Teaching Through Problem Solving", will be meeting in the IRMACS Centre. Welcome everyone!

In honour of Dr. Peter Borwein, the Executive Director of the IRMACS Centre, and in honour of everyone who is forced to suffer with multiple sclerosis or witness its devestating effects, Zachary Nevin, Christopher Schrader, and Adrian Cortes will cycle across Canada this summer in support of MS research. Arne Mooers, an IRMACS project leader, co-authored an article titled Approaching a state shift in Earth’s biosphere, published in the June 7th issue of Nature, International weekly journal of science. The article reviews "evidence that the global ecosystem as a whole can react in the same way and is approaching a planetary-scale critical transition as a result of human influence." Professor Ljiljana Trajkovic, an IRMACS project leader and a member of the IRMACS Management Committee, has been awarded the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society 2012 Meritorious Service Award for her "dedication and service to the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society." Congratulations, Ljiljana!

The IRMACS Centre will host the 2012 Modelling Summer School between July 9-July 20. The school participants will work on the problem "Modelling the social-ecological sustainability of Fraser River sockeye salmon fisheries" proposed by Dr. Sean Cox from the SFU School of Resource and Environmental Management. The IRMACS Centre is pleased to host the Canadian Society of Forensic Science 58th Conference between May 7-11th, 2012. The theme of the conference "Forensics: Public, Private or Partnership", seeking to explore the options for forensic service delivery, has attracted scientists, police agents and industry stakeholders from around the world. A special welcome to the group of forensic experts from South Africa who are visiting SFU for the first time.

Dr. Pekka K. Sinervo, Senior Vice-President, Research, of the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research, met with Dr. Peter Borwein, Founding Director of the IRMACS Centre, during his recent visit to SFU. Drs. Borwein and Sinervo expressed their joint interest to build conditions for future scientific collaborations between the two institutes.
