The Complex Systems Modelling Group (CSMG), one of IRMACS's research group, has recently had its contract renewed with the BC Ministry of Justice. This means that the highly successful project "Modelling Criminal Justice System" will continue to affect governmental policy and attract attention of researchers and practitioners alike. Congratulations to all members of the CSMG!

On behalf of the IRMACS Management Committee we are pleased to announce Dr. Felix Breden has accepted a position as one of our Deputy Directors. Felix has been a member of the management committee for many years and is also the current management committee chair. In his other life Felix is also the Chair of the Biology Department. We welcome Felix in this new role and look forward to helping him implement exciting new initiatives in the near future.

On Friday, April 13th, 2012, the IRMACS Centre will host its 7th Annual IRMACS Day. This event will mark the launch of the IRMACS 2012 Thematic Year: Modelling Sustainable Communities. The objectives of the IRMACS 2012 Thematic Year are to share with the SFU research community our vision of the future research directions of the IRMACS Centre and to promote and further explore the idea of a sustainable community as one that delivers services without depleting its resource base.

Drs. Dabbaghian and Mago, two leaders of the IRMACS MoCSSy Program and co-editors of the book "Modelling and Simulation of Complex Social Systems", have accepted 30 proposals for book chapters and invited their authors to submit full texts for further reviews.  The book will be published in the Intelligent Systems Reference Library book series by Springer in 2013.

Dr. Kirsten Zickfeld, an IRMACS Project Leader co-authored an article titled Climate response to zeroed emissions of greenhouse gases and aerosols, in which she urges the public, governments and industries to wake up to a harsh new reality. The article was published in a recent issue of Nature’s online journal and gained worldwide media attention.

IRMACS is proud to announce that our very own Deputy Director, Dr. Veselin Jungic has been selected as this years recipient of the Canadian Mathematical Society (CMS) 2012 Excellence in Teaching Award. The CMS award recognizes sustained and distinguished contributions in mathematics at the undergraduate level at a Canadian post-secondary education institution. Veso will receive the award and deliver a prize lecture at the 2012 CMS Summer Meeting in June. Congratulations Veso!

Professor Yolande Grise, the President of the Royal Society of Canada visited the IRMACS Centre on Thursday, February 2nd. Professor Grise expressed her hope that other Canadian Universities would follow the IRMACS led SFU initiative to have a seminar series that features fellows of the RSC.

We are pleased to announce that Drs. Dabbaghian and Mago, two leaders of the IRMACS MoCSSy Program are co-editors of the book "Modelling and Simulation of Complex Social Systems" that will be published in the Intelligent Systems Reference Library book series by Springer in 2013. Recently three former IRMACS members, Idris Mecer, Michael Coons, and Kevin Doerksen each published a research paper in latest issue of the mathematical journal INTEGERS. Drs. Mercer, Coons, and Doerksen were graduate student members of the IRMACS Number Theory Project. Congratulations and good luck in in the future!

The IRMACS Centre would like to welcome everyone back to the university and to wish all of our students, faculty, staff and collaborators all the best in 2012.  For the IRMACS Centre this year will be a year of new challenges and, we are confident, new successes. We are excited about the start of our new "SFU Royal Society of Canada Seminar Series", about various conferences that the Centre will host, and the new scientific theme for this year... Stay tuned!
