Dr. Kelley Lee, a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Global Health and an IRMACS Project Leader, was a member of an independent panel of global health experts calling for urgent action to avoid a repeat of the major failings that occurred during the 2014-15 Ebola outbreak in West Africa. The panel's report was published in a recent issue of The Lancet medical journal.

As we wrap up another highly successful year, the IRMACS Centre is pleased to invite all its members to the IRMACS Community Christmas Party on Wednesday, December 2, 1:00-3:00. Everyone is welcome. Don't forget to bring your favorite Christmas goody to share!

On Saturday, November 21, 2015, between 10:00am - 3:00pm, the IRMACS Centre will host the Department of Mathematics' segment of the "Research on the Mountain - Faculty of Science Open House". The event will include a poster session, hands on activities, a computing demo, and a screening of math videos. Everyone is welcome!

Dr. Mark Winston has won the prestigious 2015 Governor General Literary Award for Nonfiction for his book "Bee Time: Lessons From the Hive". His presentation at the IRMACS' hosted Royal Society of Canada Seminar Series titled "Dialogue in Bee Time: Lessons Learned from the Bees" is available here

The IRMACS Centre's research community welcomes two new projects: "Sequence-based analysis of human cancer" led by Dr. Ryan Morin, Department of Molecular Biology and Biochemistry, and "Compound Activity Mapping for Natural Products  Discovery" led by Dr. Roger Linington, Department of Chemistry. The topic of the Fall 2015 Coast to Coast seminar series is "Foundations and Applications of Big Data".  Ton some of the exceptional work that is currently being done in this field across Canada. The Coordinator of the series is Dr. Fred Popowich, Professor in the School of Computing Science and a member of the IRMACS Managment Committee. The 2015 Annual IRMACS Project Leader Meeting is scheduled for October 5th starting at 11:00 am (Program begins at 11:00, lunch at 12:30).  We will be introducing a few of our newest research projects to the community as well as bringing you an update on the Centre's developments and initiatives. The IRMACS Centre will continue this fall with our series of events entitled "SFU Research Masterclass." The format of each event is a sit down session with an interviewer, rather than a standard presentation format. This is followed by a Q&A with the audience.  We invite SFU graduate students and postdocs, as well as SFU researchers across the disciplines, SFU research personnel, and researcher grant facilitators to attend the "SFU Research Masterclass" sessions. On Thursday, September 24, 2015, the interviewee will be Dr. Ray Jennings, Department of Philosophy. Between September 15-22, 2015, the IRMACS Centre is excited to host a series of events that are part of SFU's Strategic Research Plan consultations.  These consultations will include the Office of Vice President, Research, representatives from the SRP Committee and researchers from across the university.
