Grant program: Teaching and Learning Development Grant (TLDG)

Grant recipient: Ryan P. Dill, Faculty of Science

Project team: Peter Ruben, Nadine Wicks, Diana Bedoya, Faculty of Science

Timeframe: September 2021 – September 2022

Funding: $5,000

Courses addressed:

  • BPK 417 – Obesity, Adipocyte Function and Weight Management
  • BPK 310 – Exercise/Work Physiology
  • BPK 306 – Human Physiology II
  • BPK 421 – Selected Topics in Biomedical Physiology And Kinesiology II - Ion Channel Physiology

Description: For this project, we plan to develop a framework for the assessment of Team Based Learning, which was selected as a group learning format for BPK based on its wide support within the literature and the breadth of readily available resource materials. Each collaborator has selected one of their own courses in which to assess the specific goals addressed within our proposal. We will develop a student survey in the format of a CANVAS quiz that can be used within each individual course CANVAS shell. We hope to determine whether TBL enhances student learning within BPK.

Questions addressed:

  • Does TBL improve BPK student perception of the effectiveness of their group work and leadership skills?
  • Do students feel that TBL was beneficial to their learning process?
  • Do students enjoy the TBL experience?
  • Does TBL enhance learning?
  • What benefits or challenges do instructors find with the TBL experience?

Knowledge sharing: The BPK Undergraduate Program Committee (UPC) would like to use the results of this study to develop a framework for the assessment of one of their educational goals. The student and instructor feedback generated from this proposal may also be used to help recommend Team-based Learning (TBL) more broadly within BPK.
