Earth sciences professor and Shrum Chair of Science John Clague was awarded the 2002 Bancroft Award, presented biannually by the Royal Society of Canada for exceptional instruction and research in the science of geology.
Clague is also working with the Geological Survey of Canada on an innovative Geoscape Canada project, which uses award-winning geoscape or geological landscape maps and climate change posters to help make earth science more accessible to the public. The user-friendly maps and posters all feature jargon-free science text and visually appealing graphics.
Geoscape Canada helps promote a broader understanding of Canada's geological make-up by bringing together geoscientists, educators and local communities. The premise is that Canadian communities will be more sustainable if they understand their geoscape. Local Geoscape Canada project teams are currently developing geological posters and websites of 15 urban centres across Canada.
