Updates from the Graduate Program Committee (GPC)

The School of Sustainable Energy Engineering is offering 8 travel awards to be granted to graduate students enrolled in SEE. Applicants must hold a minimum CGPA of 3.5, be travelling from December 1, 2023– August 1, 2024, and should serve as the primary or presenting author of an approved paper in a scientific conference. The award amounts to $750 for domestic conferences and $1500 for international ones. The application deadline for the award is expected to be before April 2024. The travel award applications will not be reviewed until the deadline. The TARA is awarded as a reimbursement and you’ll receive the funds after your travels.

To apply, please complete the CourSys form: https://coursys.sfu.ca/forms/see-see-graduate-student-conference-funding-applic/.

This round of GF applications will be finalized in the first week of December. If you do not receive a GF in this round, you are still eligible to receive it in the next round (April 2024). If you applied in this round, you will not need to apply again.

The new PhD Minimum Funding policy has been approved by Senate as of December 6, 2023.

This means that all PhD admits starting Fall 2024 will be guaranteed a minimum funding of $28,000/year for their first 4 years (12 terms) of their PhD program.

You can read the approved GGR 1.17 on the GPS website.

In regard to our SEE ranking policy, all awards and graduate fellowships will be adjudicated based on:

  1. University Requirements: see the Terms of Reference for each award

  2. Additional Criteria for SEE:
    1. Must be registered as a full-time, regular (not "on-leave") student in a MASc or PhD program.
    2. Completion of at least two terms of their program at the time of application.
    3. Have not received a Graduate Dean Entrance Scholarship (GDES), Graduate Fellowship, Entrance Scholarship, or equivalent within the past three terms.
    4. Must have a minimum first-class (3.50). In exceptional cases, other evidence of outstanding ability may outweigh this criterion.
    5. Students will be eligible to hold a GF only during the first 9 semesters of a Master's program and during the first 15 semesters of a Ph.D. program.
    6. Eligible applicants will be ranked based on grades, research excellence, previous funding received and progress in the current program.
    7. The Graduate Program Committee will distribute the allocated BASS school budget to as many eligible candidates as possible whilst recognizing outstanding research contribution at its discretion. SEE recognizes that scholarly achievement depends, in part, on a students' positionality. Members of equity seeking groups are encouraged to self-identify so the selection committee can consider their positionality when evaluating scholarly achievements.
    8. Ph.D. students are usually given a higher priority than MASc students (subject to availability of funds).
    9. Research productivity and excellence will be given higher consideration than the CGPA as the students’ progress toward the final stages of their programs.
    10. Holders of major domestic or international scholarships with values greater than or equal to $12000/year, such as tri-council (NSERC, SSHRC, CIHR), and externally funded government/industry sources, have lower priority for GFs.
    11. Student must have completed an up-to-date GPR at the time of disbursement.
